Johns Hopkins Psychedelics and Smoking Cessation Online Survey 1

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine are currently recruiting individuals who have quit smoking cigarettes or reduced their smoking (even temporarily) after an experience with a psychedelic, for participation in an online survey. Our team has previously conducted innovative research on the effects of compounds including psilocybin, dextromethorphan, and salvinorin A.
The goal of this survey is to learn more about whether psychedelic drugs are associated with reduction or cessation of cigarette smoking. We want to characterize people's experiences in nonlaboratory settings in which taking a psychedelic may have led to reducing or quitting smoking. For the purposes of this survey, we will be asking specifically about individuals who have quit smoking cigarettes or reduced their smoking (even temporarily) after experiences with psilocybin (magic) mushrooms, LSD, morning glory seeds, mescaline, peyote cactus, San Pedro cactus, DMT, or ayahuasca. This research study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
The survey is completely anonymous (IP addresses will not be recorded) and will require 40-45 minutes to complete. If you are interested in participating, please click the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/nonsmoker. Your participation is voluntary and will not be financially compensated.
Participants must be 18+ years of age, speak/write English fluently, and have experienced a reduction or cessation of cigarette smoking after an experience with one of the psychedelic substances listed above. For more information, please contact the researchers via the site's private messaging system.

After taking psilocybin mushrooms I quit smoking regular cigarettes and started smoking an e-cig every once in a while to curb cravings.
I'm not really sure why, I just had a realization that they were really bad for me I guess.
I gave up and became a full-time regular smoker though after not tripping again for a while.
I haven't tripped since and am still a smoker.

Tripping has never really changed my perspective on smoking, but 1.5 hits of acid and a house party, and holy fuck drinking just seems like the stupidest idea ever. Although, i have been convinced while tripping that my body had mixed up nicotine with oxygen, and i'd suffocate if i didn't smoke.

On mushrooms I find myself chain smoking like Hunter S Thompson, but I could see how you could use mushrooms to quit smoking effectively, and how after the trip the urge to smoke might be lessened.

I started smoking 'cause I rolled blunts. I started smoking blunts. Mushrooms had no effect on my tobacco use. I used to smoke the Rustica tobacco in Los Angeles that gets you high a little.

Isn't this a bit of a flawed premise? I mean, what can be learned when the invitation is "have you tripped AND quit?" Kind of ignores those who trip and keep on toking doesn't it? I'm struggling to see what conclusions can be drawn.
Saying that, I'm sure Johns Hopkins wouldn't be wasting their time on something if it were badly flawed.
I didn't stop smoking, and during tripping I love smoking - it feels clean and pure! So I can't get involved

Yeah, I'm talking tobacco. I generally detest myself for the filthy habit, but when I'm shrooming it up, it's just so right!
So much for the insights of psylocybin.

Maybe if you really wanted to quit then psilocybin would help. I was encouraged by neighbors with oxygen tanks. Every time I go outside I can hear my neighbor's respirator going, filling her lungs with precious O2. There used to be another guy with a tank who died. I met a guy who had part of his tongue removed from smoking tobacco.

Hi All,
Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm. While it's true that psychedelics per se don't necessarily lead to smoking cessation, there's some anecdotal evidence out there that suggests the psychedelic experience can facilitate smoking cessation for some individuals.
We've heard from over 170 people in 20 different countries so far who have completed this survey to help us explore how and why they stopped or cut back their cigarette smoking after a psychedelic experience.
Intention definitely plays a big part, and we have also recently completed a small laboratory study in which many of our participants who underwent a psilocybin-facilitated treatment protocol were able to quit smoking. For more info check out this article published today (Washingtonian article ), as well as this video from Psychedelic Science 2013 (http://youtu.be/RHc60goAxv8).
Cheers!

I think this survey is a great idea. There are anecdotes of people quitting various things after using psychedelics.
Beyond that, I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we deeply appreciate all the effort you guys invest into researching psychedelics. You're the only ones really researching this important field of medicine, and we're more than happy to help in any way we can.

I agree that IF a person is inclined to change anything about their life, and they have the correct type of "experience" that they usually can find internal strength to move forward with their plan. I think that limiting yourself to only one type of highly addictive drug is doing your study injustice. No one logically thinks smoking is a good idea, and it is written all over the packs, the news and every newspaper. It is in the back of our mind every time we use that it is killing us. This is no different than alcohol or other hard drugs. Again, I think your study should focus on hard drug use after an experience where an individual wanted to make a change prior to. (alcohol/cigarettes/caffeine)
And no I wont take the survey, but after my last experience I gave myself a date to quit. I followed through on that date. I have fell off the wagon and had just over 60 cigs in the last month and a half. I went from a pack a day+ to 0 for about 3 weeks. And am very cautious about increasing past 2-4 a day I use now.
The experience convinced me that I finally had enough of it, and that I would eventually kill myself at $7+ a pack. You tell someone in that mindset that they are killing themselves and paying for it, you are probably going to change their life. I think your study will redundantly echo what most of the "psychedelic" scene has known for years.
Good luck and good vibes to you!

They'll gain some nice, exploratory data with this. Low cost, no risk. It's a perfectly fine study.

That was looooong, but I completed it.
After every trip I go through a couple of days of non smoking only to slowly rebuild the habit to where it was before the trip.

Very cool! I quit just by chance. I had a cigarette in my hand while tripping and decided I didn't get a buzz so why keep going
