Dry oven sterilization
    #19381336 - 01/07/14 08:38 AM (10 years, 24 days ago)

I know that ovens don't work to sterilize moist substrate but what about dry substrate ?  I mean could I bake sawdust and bran for an hour and when finished add sterile water to rehydrate then cool and grow .  I have a PC for spawn but it seems too small for bulk substrates .

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Wally

If it's big enough for grain jars, it's big enough to pasteurize. Also, you don't want to sterilize your substrate, you want to pasteurize it.

Actually I'm pretty sure you do sterilize sawdust when it contains bran. Something about pasteurizing not cutting it for supplemented substrates. Check out the edibles section, they might know more on the subject.

Yeahh didn't catch the bran part. In other words OP, load a bunch of jars in your pc just like you would with pf cakes and sterilize.

supplemented saw dust will need to be pc'd, while clean sawdust probably has less nasties than grain there are still going to be nooks and crannies that harbor contams and one should not forget that dormant bacterial endospores (as they would be in dry substrates) are extremely tough to destroy (hence the 12-24 hour presoak often used with grain ). Steam is the best way to ensure that sterilization temps are reached throughout the substrate.
I have had some luck with fast growing species using pasturised or sometimes just rehydrated sawdust from wood pellets as they are a pretty clean substrate but the addition of additional nutrients is going to greatly reduce your chances of success in my opinion. You could of course increase the nutritional content of your substrates by using larger than normal amounts of spawn and this will also reduce colonization times.
