Sales of legal weed in Colorado = Success!
    #19377865 - 01/06/14 03:46 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/01/06/colorado-pot-sales/

The figures are out for Colorado’s first day of recreational marijuana sales. The total may send other states scrambling to follow suit. The lines were long and the prices somewhat higher than for medical marijuana. Still, the figure exceeded merchants’ highest hopes: $1,000,000 in one day.
Legalization of marijuana in Colorado has gone further than anywhere else on earth.

The opening of business on New Year’s Day was an historic first. Colorado has gone further with legalizing and regulating the sale of pot than any other place on earth, even Amsterdam. In spite of its reputation, Amsterdam has merely adopted an attitude of tolerance; marijuana is still illegal there.

The eyes of America are focused like a laser beam on the Centennial State because, let’s face it, nothing broadcasts success like dollar signs. Many feared that the opening day of the state’s retail marijuana outlets would produce mayhem. But the Denver Post reported that government officials “marveled at the calm.” Among the officials who were out and about, keeping an eye on the masses, were two Denver city councilmen. Councilman Charlie Brown was ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the mellowness of the crowd. Councilman Albus Brooks was impressed with the ‘peacefulness’ and ‘diversity’ of the customers he saw waiting. They were possibly the only ones more surprised by the ‘mellowness’ and ‘peacefulness’ of the waiting crowd than by the scope of the sales and the length of the lines.
Activists have plans for the rest of the country.

Activists for marijuana legalization were ecstatic at the results. They expect to put the marijuana legalization issue on the ballot in Alaska this year. By 2016, they also hope that Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana and Nevada will put similar measures to a vote. Lawmakers in six more states — Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont — may take action on their own. That’s just the estimate for now. With dollar signs dazzling lawmakers’ sight, the guess could easily prove to be a conservative one.

The state of Washington has already legalized recreational marijuana. However, it won’t implement a structure for its sale until later this year. A total of eighteen other states have adopted the use of pot as a medicine. They’re watching the results in Colorado before taking a further step.

Mason Tvert, an activist with the Marijuana Policy Project, denied that others should view the effort in Colorado as an experiment. He said, “In fact, the experiment was marijuana prohibition, and that experiment failed.” A related sentiment was voiced by William Downing, an activist in Massachusetts. Downing said, “People are learning. The rest of the nation is finding out that they have been lied to about cannabis by their government for many decades.”

Indeed, support for recreational pot has increased across the country since Colorado and Washington approved their measures. According to a recent Gallup poll, the number of Americans who support legalization of the drug has shown an astonishing 10% growth in the last year. The figure now stands at 58%. Add that number to the vision of $1,000,000 dancing in legislators’ heads and it’s hard to imagine how any state will long resist the trend toward the recreational use of pot.

Sounds pretty cool, but I'll bet those figures will start dropping once the novelty factor is gone.

So with a 25% weed tax in addition to the state tax of 2.9% that means Colorado just generated about $279,000 of tax revenue in one day.

I'm sure those figures will drop, but I imagine they will remain just as lucrative as sales from alcohol. That kind of tax revenue is what will change the minds of politicians.

I wish Oregon and California would have gotten the right idea too. Its awesome to see some pot progress. I cant wait for the day that getting a felony for haivng an Oz or 2 will be an unheard of thing.

I was there day one and waited for 3 hours to get an 8th of some sweet island skunk. The prices were pleasently surprising. $14.99 a gram, $21.99 a sixteenth, $35.99 an 8th, and $70.99 a quarter. I ended up paying $43.83 for the 8th I bought after taxes.

I usually get my cannabis from a buddy for $150 an ounce, but I just wanted to be a part of history and the fun. Another friend of mine questioned why I would wait 3 hours in line when I get it so cheap and easily, but I have waited my whole life for this... 3 more hours wasn't shit! I can now tell my grandkids that I was one of the first people in the world to legally buy recreational cannabis and that is worth way more than a 3 hour wait and $43! Truly one of the most awesome experiences of my life!

Just go to weedmaps.com and check out their Colorado shops.

The shops list menus there with strains, amounts, and prices.

It's pretty high priced... >15 a gram, and >40 an 1/8th for pretty much anything.

Prices wont stay that high.

Most people forget that it is now legal to cultivate marijuana for personal use.

If they keep the price high  more people will just resort to growing it on their own.

If they were smart they would just drop price's to the point that even a home grower would think the price's were fair.

Look forward to seeing other State's take their head's out of their asses and follow suit.
