Random shroom ID. No pic.

I stumbled across a lone mushroom at the park while smoking (I live in Newfoundland, Canada). Growing in grassy areas around some fern type plants and deciduous trees. It's color resemebled that of bread. It was about 4-5cm in height, with a cap with a diameter about the same. The cap was rounded , but not spherically. The stem was about 2cm in diameter, and was fairly slick. The cap had a texture like dried bread, and there were two or three fairly big holes in the cap, giving it a mild 'cheddar cheese' sort of look (not sure if these were natural or caused by animals). The underside of the cap had what appeared to be tiny pores. When the cap is cracked in half, the cross section reveals the cap has two layers. The top layer (which is the thickest of the two) is a sort of foamy, typical fungus material, and the bottom layer seemed to consist of a series of fibers that ran down paralell in the direction of the stem, and i guess the spaces between the fibres are what gave the underside of the cap its pored look.

oh, and the mushroom bruised blue, almost instantly after being damaged. a real heavy, inky blue.

any ideas? i know it's not psychoactive. i'm just curious.

yeah, that was what i was thinking. i don't know a lot about shrooms, but boletes are the only type i can name that have pores.

Yup, your mushroom is a bolete.

Actually, each of the fibres is a tiny tube. The inner surface of each tube is where the spores are formed.

The holes you described in the cap were probably holes burrowed by insects or slugs, both of which love to eat mushrooms.

The fact that it turned blue almost instantly is a bad sign for edibility. Many of the quick bruising boletes are poisonous. They cause gastric upset, which is the fancy way of saying they cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fun stuff like that.

One possible species is Boletus sensibilis, which is poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!
