All three plates are the same. I am honestly a little bummed that we didn't sub it before it started dropping spores. I was out of town and my partner saw so enthralled watching it he didn't think about the spores contaminating the isolate. It might not really matter since we are gonna try to o o grain then to four inch dowels to put into live birches.

It is too bad that you didn't catch it but am sure it will be fine - let us know!

Have you inoculated live birch before?  I have considered hitting a few of the trees around here for a personal source but am nervous that I will just end up harming some trees with no fruit...

Nothing to add (everyone said what I would have suggested) but man that is badass!
Makes me want to track down a culture of chaga.

perhaps you cant pluck one of the fruits, open it up and take a culture from inside the chaga, much like culturing a wild found specimen.

Birch is a weed tree on my farm. We have 80 acres of them. So plenty to experiment with

I am trying to do this as well, but have never made dowels or inoculated trees/logs.  Is there any reason you're using 4 inch dowels?  I thought they were usually smaller?  I'm really clueless when it comes to this type of growing...
Also, how do you colonize the dowels, just with a wedge in a ball jar, or...?

you can just throw a bunch of dowels with some grains in a jar  and treat it as a normal spawn jar except maybe longer incubation.

but for logs i think it's better so inoculate with sawdust, either by cutting ''>'' out of them or in between logs on the ends (sawdust sandwiched), it goes faster, less expensive, less chance of failure.

Sounds good for the dowels  - but we're talking live trees here, not logs so no sandwiching opportunities!

just use grain and hydrate the dowels by soaking them in coffee water. we soak for a couple of days, then bring to boil, steam dry, and then autoclave for one hour.  then inoculate with grain.  We sold 50,000 plus plugs last year.  The usual size plug is 1 inch by 5/16th dia.  But for spiking live trees we are going with something much longer.

How many dowels are you putting into live trees?  Do you think the strain would translate well to aspens?

Nice page! Got you on my list for future cultures.

Two other notes. Make sure you use spiral groove dowels and as you heat them up keep checking them. You are shooting for 25 percent sinking. In other words don't over hydrate then. For your first batch disk 24 hrs then boil. Sample periodically by scooping some out and seeing what percent sink. Be SURE you let them steam completely dry too. If they are too wet when you clave them the water comes out and settles in the bottom of the bag. Not good

Kinda confused on the sinking thing... so I just take a bunch out of the boiling water and toss them into a different pot of cold water to see how many sink?

Do you still have this culture? I am looking to trade for a Reishi culture, or something, as I am interested into doing an experiment inoculating live birch trees.
