Things I 'think' I have learned in the first month of mycology
    #19375823 - 01/06/14 04:47 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Well, I am a month into deciding to grow mushrooms, and think I am learning a lot thanks to the good people here, and pioneers before me. If I can ask, and I'll give my own in a second, were some of the epiphanies people came to when they were newbs like I am? surely there were plenty as the experts here learned, but what were they, do any of you remember them now that you are far past these newb stages?

So far what I think I have learned,

Trich is everywhere and the biggest obstacle in my path right now. Sanitary conditions are a must, at least if you do not want to waste a lot of your time. clean grows can happen if you are semi-careful, but it is still rolling the dice, which like with anything else you want to have success with, you want to do as little as possible. Because of this, having a pressure cooker is major, and at least a Still Air Box, and good sanitation techniques.

All mushrooms do not grow on manure. I thought they did, or rather I didn't take the time to realize the mushrooms growing on trees didn't have some bear or something use it as toilet paper obviously so it just made sense.

Like anything else, growing mushrooms IS easy.....but even though I can kick a soccer ball, pluck a note on a guitar, or draw a smiley face, being a expert at it requires time, effort, resources, dedication to learning the peculiar's and developing the skills, and obviously will have failures, setbacks and successes along the way. Those videos on youtube make it look so simple though in a few minutes.

Basically every couple of months for the first few years your going to look back at what you thought you knew and realize you didn't know anything.

Congratulations on the first step

Liquid cultures, even from reputable sponsors, are a pain in the ass to work with and may require extensive cleanup on agar. It's easier to clone wild or grocery store specimens and trade for more cultures with other people who use agar than to bother with the thing many consider convenient.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you here.  I grew only from LC syringes for almost all of my grows (got into agar only a couple months ago).  Never had any contamination problems.  Just get your syringes from a reputable vendor, like sporeworks or TSD.

Pain in the ass to work with?  Why?  Injecting a syringe into a grain jar in open air is a pain in the ass?  I don't see what so rough about it.  I think it's way more easy and convenient to work with when you're new to growing and aren't ready to learn agar/cloning/SAB building (things that actually kind of ARE a pain in the ass).  Flaming a syringe and injecting it into a grain jar is not difficult.

That's just my opinion though

Aw come on, this is a light hearted thread, about what people 'learned' or were epiphany's for them at various times....it isn't even necessarily about them being right or wrong, it is about the journey and enjoying it along the way. No one should be disagreeing with anyone on it, each persons journey is different surely, and we learn differently.

One of my favorite hurdles was moving from multispore innoculations with syringes, to isolates on agar from sporeprints :thumbup:

Well sorry, I didn't me to be 'heavy-hearted' - I even put a disclaimer at the end with a smily face!

I always love to hear opinions that differ from mine, and when people disagree with me I almost always learn something.

my biggest hurdle was not to check the jars every day, learn be become a bit ''zen'' about it, have trust, and enjoy the ride.

I had consistent bacterial problems with both the culture syringes I bought (from a very reputable Shroomery vendor) and had to isolate on agar to get away from them. I flamed the needle until it glowed before injecting, so that's not it... I assume I mishandled the syringe such that the contents got contaminated, but it seems like this is way too easy to do. At least with agar you know where you stand.

It probably wasn't you mishandling, contamination does happen.  Guess I've just been lucky!  You're right though, with agar it is nice to be able to see that it's clean.
