I live in north east florida, today i went for a wallk outside and stumbled upon this colony of mushrooms. Habitat was dead leaves in the woods growing near live oak. No bruising was observed. Spore print is purple.

I would have to say they appear to be either old beat-up Hypholoma or Armillaria, but boy they look interesting. Can we see a photo of the spore print? I don't mean to be rude, but can you take photos with a better camera or in brighter lighting?

Cubensis don't grow in the woods at the base of a tree, and they aren't fused at the base like this. They would also bruise blue.

Better camera and lighting is not available. I can post a picture of the spores through the camera I have, but it won't be great.

Can we see some of the caps as well? Are they yellow? Tan? Brown? What color are the gills? Brown? Grey? Purple? Blackish? These are most likely Hypholoma (and not psychoactive) but I'd love to see some more photos including that spore print

I will stick with Hypholoma, though I am unsure which species these might be. Not psychoactive. Possibly edible. The gills don't look yellow enough for H. fasciculare.

I figured they weren't active due to the lack of bruising. But I was pretty sure they were a psilocybe. It's okay to be wrong though. Thanks for the kick in the right direction.

There are no non-psychoactive Psilocybes. There used to be, but they got moved out of the genus and into Deconica.

As far as I understand Deconica and Psilocybe are damn near the same thing just Deconica lack the favored compounds.
This collection is definitely Hypholoma of some sort, though.

I think I was told by Alan a few months ago that there are a few Psilocybe which are not psychoactive. Perhaps Psilocybe atrobrunnea being one of them?

Impressive find and awesome ID. Quite possibly the coolest Psathyrella I've ever heard of.

"Psilocybe while the non-bluing clade were transferred to the genus Deconica." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe
From this thread:
Quote:
Alan Rockefeller said:
It wasn't moved into Deconica because it contains no psilocybin or psilocin, it was renamed because it wasn't closely related to the type species of Psilocybe. A side effect of moving the non-active Psilocybes into Deconica is that all of the Psilocybes are active.
There is no rule that Psilocybes need to have psilocybin, it is possible one could be discovered which lacks it. But all known species of Psilocybe do contain psychoactive tryptamines.
I was in error. I misremembered the quote. My bad

Psilocybe atrobrunnea is a nomen dubium, the type collection was lost and the description could apply to multiple taxa.
Psilocybe fuscofulva is a better name for this taxon. It is closely related to Psilocybe semilanceata, P. silvatica and P. graveolens, however does not stain blue or contain any psilocybin or psilocin. Even when grown on media enriched with triptamines, gc/ms analysis still shows that it is completely psilocybin free. This is the first known Psilocybe that does not have any psilocybin. The paper on all this was written by Jan Borivicka and has been submitted for publication.

Now I know! So it must have lost the trait secondarily.

That's really neat, actually.
