Assholes at the gym

Any of you guys lift or just go to the gym in general? I decided to start putting on some muscle in the past year and I've made quite a bit of progress. I'm by no means huge, but it feels good to have gotten stronger especially when it comes to manual labor. Much easier to lift things up, carry them for longer distances. My body also just looks much more fit and toned, which is a self esteem booster.
Anyway, I've always been a pretty relaxed dude, when I go to the gym I do my own thing, got a routine I follow, I'm still a beginner when it comes to lifting so its obvious that I'm still figuring shit out. I can't understand for the life of me why some dudes are such assholes at the gym. Some big dudes will walk in and I'll hear him and his buddies mocking people like me, who clearly aren't massive and benching 350lbs. Or they'll just stand around being all obnoxious and shit. It really kills my vibes when I'm at the gym at that kinda thing goes on. I just started hitting the gym when its more empty and I can just in peace. Why do people have to be like that

People are people regardless of where they go, I don't think there is a higher concentration of them at the gym necessarily. I honestly know more guys who are willing to share their experience and give out advice to guys who are needing a hand with something than guys who talk shit about people in the gym.

Quit being so self-concious, fuck what they think.
Now what really pisses me off is when someone is trying to talk to me while I lift, or telling me to "no dude you gotta try it this way" It's like fuck off I came here to lift not listen to your shit.

What gym do you go to, OP?
I had two different gym memberships at the same time (one had free classes the other didn't) and the free class gym was full of stuck up bitchy ass rich people and I said fuck this and felt bad for almost abandoning my first gym. I vibe with everyone at Planet Fitness than any other place.
Also, the time of the day matters as well. I go at like 4am so there's no one at PF that early who fucks around.

I'm looking forward to using a gym again as I'm back in school now. I always found it to be a friendly atmosphere when I went before. You can get a membership even if you're not a student so that might be something to look into.
I've heard similar things about commercial gyms to what the OP describes though. People see it as a meat market/beach kind of scene and think that asserting dominance will win over mates. This is why women-only gyms are popular too, women often get similar unsolicited feedback on their fitness level if they don't appear to be in the best shape already, or unwanted sexual advances. I guess either you learn to brush it off somehow or find somewhere with a friendlier atmosphere.

Planet Fitness is lame though. They have all sorts of stupid rules. OP, look around for a smaller gym. They can be cheaper, and more tight knit, where nobody gives ya shit.

You can't drop weights, you can't grunt, you can't be intense. Being intense isn't being retarded. What's retarded is douchebags standing by you arms crossed if you breathe too loudly, and posters calling people lunkers. Fuck that, I'll work out where I can do it the way I want.

Ive never experienced any lunk alarm going off or staff walking around making sure people aren't grunting or whatever. I'm sure it solely depends on location.

I prefer to work out at a gym where I can push my sets to failure, to where at the end of each set if all I can do is drop the weights, so be it. I prefer to work out at a gym where I can grunt if I want to, and get loud if I'm feeling good & that loudness pushes out an extra three reps. I prefer to be at a gym where I'm surrounded by people I know, all of whom are cool, all of whom will spot if necessary, all of whom will share tips, and all of whom will get pumped right with me & help build up my confidence.
I don't pay five times as much either. I studied Tae Kwon Do for over a decade, starting when I was a child. Stopping that was a huge mistake on my part. The gym I work out in is in the back of that studio. I pay $20 per month to owner of this school, a man that's known me for most of my life, and taught me some of the most important lessons that I've learned. He's flexible about when I pay, always has a smile, and always gets pumped when I'm lifting, cheering me on. I would much rather give him my money than any commercial gym. I don't care if PF is half the price. It's not worth to me. There is no where else I'd rather work out than this little gym that I go to. It's my therapy, it's my active meditation. It's where I go to center myself, and push myself further.

I do agree that grunting helps keep you going. I found it pretty lame when I first joined PF and saw the picture of a cartoon man with a tank top on, holding a gallon of water and right next to it says "this is the definition of a lunk " I was like Wait, why are you guys judging when on the other wall your guys" mission statement says that no one in here will be judged.
This amazing woman athlete /fitness chick is coming to my state in a few months to do a 41 mile run from one end of the grand canyon to the other. There's no way in hell I could do that (plus ive never ran any marathon's or anything so I wouldn't want this to be my first time and I end up falling and dying down the canyon lol) but she is also doing a weekend boot camp that I'm very interested in.
Her name is Ashley Horner shes beautiful. A little muscular, but gorgeous.

41 miles i can do... in 8-10 hours give or take...that's brutal...
But on the flipside I can do a half marathon in 1:30 which is bad... trying to do 13.1 miles in 1 hour

Man op you just gotta tune them out if there giving you trouble. Maybe your lifting form is off and they're picking on you for that. Are you dead lifting ? If so you could be doing it wrong. It takes a while to perfect deadlift form. It helps if you got a lifting partner too. Best of luck bro.

we just got planet I heard that yea they only have pulley weights
the other place that was there shut down because people would take the pegs out for the pulley weights, so people would buy passes one day when it was nice and then probably never come back
so if you wanted to use a machine you had to like search the building for a metal peg, because the high school kids were stealing them just to be dicks
it was a fucking joke...
I don't like resistive weight at all though unless I'm by myself
but i don't have people to work out with, and college is just faggot bullshit

being big doesn't always mean your slow. I weighed 185 ( my height places 160 as my max weight) and was fourth overall in a 5k with over 100 people. It's how you train, genetics, etc- multiple factors

fuck a 5k
I'm talking about long distance miles upon miles at a consistent speed
look at marathon runners body's...ultra skinny, they (like me) are designed to run for hours not ultra quick bursts
than look at Usain Bolt, he's the fastest dude on earth and yeah he's bigger but I bet he'd be done after 2-3 miles at his high speeds...

Maybe they are? I've been working extensively on the 3 compound movements, bench press, dead lift, and squat. I used to be a long distance runner, could run a mile in under 4:40, so I was pretty decent, but that much running burned off all my fat and muscle and left me looking like a stick.
Since lifting I've put on around 30lbs, mostly muscle but definitely some fat. I can bench pretty well and my squat form is okay but I'm still working on my dead lift, I'm obviously still learning. I go to a school gym at my university and unfortunately there are a huge number of meat heads and bros. I mean these guys clearly think they're the shit.
I shouldn't be so self-conscious, your right, but its tough for me at the gym. I'm not an insanely tall dude and I'm not huge, so when I go in and have these meat heads eying me, it just totally throws off my focus.
I just started goin to the gym when its not crowded so I don't have to deal with it

Why don't you just go confront them next time they do it if it bothers you? You shouldn't change up your schedule just so you won't feel like you're bein judged by some random strangers in a gym. Not even in an aggressive way, just ask if they're there to train or stare, tell them they've been where you are at some point so it makes no sense to judge..or something like that.

Ah thats your problem, you're just dealing with highschool jock mentality. Some of those guys never grow out of it. Fuck em. Just think of it as mental strength training as well, build your focus so that they could be pointing and laughing and it still wouldn't faze you. And don't take someone 'eyeing' you necessarily as criticism. I watch people all the time because its a great way to pick up new workouts
I go to the climbing gym, so half the people are super serious- working on handstand pushups and one-armed pullups and muscle ups, and the other half are parents chasing their kids around like its a jungle gym and college couples on date night... It's an interesting scene If anything, people are too nice- sometimes I want to work on a problem myself without someone giving me the answer or distracting me.

I just started goin to the gym when its not crowded so I don't have to deal with it
The thing is, a lot of people that go to to the gym think it's all about lifting heavy. It's not. It's about proper form first. Any meathead that isn't a complete dumbass knows this.
So this is my suggestion.
When you do the following exercises (bench, dead lift, squat), do the following things:
1. For bench, go down ALL THE WAY until the bar hits your chest. Many weightlifters do not count it as a "real rep" if you only go down halfway, and will make fun of you.
2. When you squat, do a DEEP SQUAT. Make sure your back is straight, and keep your face looking towards the ceiling to keep your back straight. People who only go down halfway for the squat but add 400lbs are the ones that get laughed at. Adding heavy weight for the sake of adding weight is not impressive at all if you aren't doing the form right.

Well, I don't really MOCK them I guess, but if I'm with a friend and I see dat shit I usually whisper, "That guy is not doing the form right..."

There are more than 3 compound lifts - at the bare minimum you should include overhead press or you are at a high risk of hurting your shoulder. Bench press only works on the front of your shoulder and if you don't even it out by working on the back (via overhead press) you are a high risk for injury down the line.
You should read Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe.

I remember a friend of mine mentioned something about the gym last week, it was right before I was walking to my chemistry class & he began going on about the gym. We spoke about it for aboout 10 minutes before we moved on to a new topic. I don't remember exactly what he said about the gym, but apparently they recently plowed a gym now its history. They ar eplanning on building a new one to replace it an a few months, but idk exactly when they are.
I've never been too big on the gym, but my friends used to go ther all the time. They would sneak off their when I would be playing chess. I normally played chess & then I'd receive a message informing me that they arrived at the gym. My brother actually just got back from the gym & he made a new gym buddy. They both are intending to record their gym sessions & then see what results they got to match em. Normally they don't match up to each other & one of them is rather off.

His approach is just one way to go about things is all, it won't necessarily work for everyone, as obviously different people have different goals. You don't have to squat low bar like he recommends if it doesn't work out for you, his answer isn't the definitive one.

Exactly. If everybody squatted low bar, they would be doing only 1/3rd of the weight they would otherwise be doing, because low bar works your muscles better, and is more difficult to do heavy lifting on. I see people adding 600lbs and then barely bending their knees, what is the point of that?

There are some people that are insecure at the gym, whether or not they are in good shape. There are also people that are just pricks, take your pick. I try not to pay anyone any mind at the gym, I just go there to work out and leave.

That is one of the most ignorant things I have heard lately crystal, gj. Do you guys have any concept of what olympic lifts are? Low bar doesn't work your muscles better, that is a vague and nonsensical claim.
People are different and have different body types, a squat style that works for you might not work for someone else. More difficult does not mean better.

Yeah I don't understand this, it's a squat. I was always taught there's 2 ways to do a squat, the right way and the wrong way. No variations

Go do bench press with your legs in the air, that will be harder but it isn't better for your chest. You have to do the movement that works for you.Different people are built in different ways like ive said.

No, that isn't at all what i mean. Low bar refers to the position of the bar on your back. Olympic lifters squat high bar, with the bar closer to their neck, whilst powerlifters typically squat low bar with the bar rested more on their rear delts.

Yes, in Olympic-style squats you go down even further. You squat down as low as you can, until your knees are completely bent and your butt is practically touching your calves:
There's obviously a proper way to squat. If there weren't any rules, then Olympic lifting wouldn't even be considered a legitimate sport. There's a proper way to do EVERY SPORT, from golfing to tennis to figure skating to lunging.

Okay that's not what I meant by low bar, I was simply talking about doing the full-range of squatting motion.

Well, that is what the term low bar means when people talk about it. If you look at powerlifters or olympic lifters you will see they all squat differently, some with pretty noticeable variations in their form. There isn't really a definitive way to do it was the point, hence why you should take rippetoe with a grain of salt.

You are right, there's different variations on the squat. However, when you are doing each variation, you are still supposed to do its specific variation correctly with proper form, otherwise it's not considered a real rep. I think that's what everybody was talking about.

I've never really had a bad experience with assholes at the gym, but I do like to buy my own equipment. A gym will always have more equipment possibly of a higher quality, but there is something really cool about owning your own stuff.
The worst experiences I've had at the gym are just when it's so packed that you can't get onto ANY of the equipment that you want/need.

I just wanted to say that to see a human rep a set of squats with "perfect form" is, in the words of an old coach, "A thing of beauty." Idk, I think squat form is often hard for many people at first but when you see someone who's got it down repping 500 lbs or more it's incredible to watch.

Vapor's right Crystal. Also, plenty of people bench without having the bar touch their chest. Plenty of BIG ASS professionals. So fuck whatever people at your gym will make fun of people for. People who go to the gym and stare at other people and mock are losers. Not everybody has the same range of motion in their shoulders.

Don't really mean to call you out here man but can you really do multiple 4 minute miles? Like I said, I just started lifting but I've been running for a while. I mean, the fastest marathon time ever ran by Mutai was in 2:03.02 at a 4:42 mile pace. And the fastest mile time ever was in 3:43, fastest 800 in around 9:17 which is a 4:40 pace. If you can run multiple miles in 4 minutes, your pretty much are an olympic level runner. You might be around the 5 mintue mark or a bit above?
Its tough keeping up with this thread haha, never though there'd be this much discussion about lifting. But just to touch upon what everyones been saying. I've been focusing A LOT on form. I haven't increased the weight a stupid amount because I want to perfect my form first. When I bench I always touch my chest, never let it bounce. When I squat I make sure I go deep, although I'm still curving my back a bit. The dead lift is where I struggle the most, maintain correct form, even with a slight weight increase I get sloppy. And dont get me wrong, those arent the only 3 lifts I do. I military press, wide and narrow pullups, goblet squats, rows, other supplement movements.
I really would like to move to another gym, one thats not a college gym, which other than having meatheads, is also insanely over crowded. I'm gonna move from where I'm living currently to a place closer to a public gym, I'll probably start goin there eventually. I appreciate the advice guys, instilled me with some new found motivation

"being intense" is typically disruptive and obnoxious to most people. work out at home if you can't hold in your awesomeness.

Its also physically dangerous to throw weights (for your muscles/tendons), instead of placing them down with proper form / control.

Shit doing manual labor, you can think your badass as much as you like for working like a monkey but when you hurt your back and are in rehab for 6 months no one's going to be impressed.

Certain exercises you've gotta drop em. Cleans, for example.

Haha what are you talking about? If someone wants to get bigger/stronger, they SHOULD be struggling, it's not supposed to be easy. Yes, even with perfect form.
And I was half joking about the sissies thing, only half though.
By the way, who "throws" weights? I have never seen that. Throwing and dropping are 2 different things.

I was always taught that if you had to drop on any max it wasn't really your max because you weren't in control for the entire repetition.

Well look at like a deadlift in powerlifting. They don't lower the weight back to the floor, they just bring it to a lock out then drop it. For bodybuilding you want to be in control the whole time yeah, but maxing out and absolutely going for your 1RP is a pretty infrequent thing.

Also many many people at they gym have told me to not lower the bar all the way down to your chest when bench pressing because it hurts your shoulders when your older. I have heard this multiply times from people in their 40's-50's who had big muscles. I believe them and it makes sense to not over extend your shoulders. I never go past about 90° angle with my shoulders and I have a very big and strong chest.

Deadlift included. Lock, then lower while mirrorring the form for the lift in reverse. 1RP, insignificant as it may be, didn't count if you dropped back then.

I do that for all my regular lifts yeah, but taking it to failure means that sometimes the weight isn't going to get lowered perfectly. Agree to disagree I guess.

Yeah pretty much, if I'm going to failure, I'm not always able to just set them down nice. I don't drop them so hard the weights fly all over the place, or to bend the dumbells. Bent dumbells piss me off.

drop weights all you want sooner or later there's going to be a pretzel on the floor and your going to be in it looking like an asshole or even worse have a broken toe
you should feel great about getting the weight up that the last thing you want to do is drop it
same with squats I've seen a picture of a guy that was literally round like a street fighter character under 950lbs of weight
they didn't take the picture because he unracked the thing

I ignore everyone and do my own thing in the gym. The only way I mock someone is if they are doing something obscenely retarted or annoying.
So unless you're doing that I'd say you're probably just imagining things.
As for all the squat talk, there isn't really a proper way persay just what works best for you. My squat only improved when I accepted that and quit doing shit that didn't work just because someone said it was the right way.

alright fuck it... i can probably do 2 miles in 8 minutes than be burnt.. I've never tried it... but based on my performance I know I can do atleast 2.... I have a daily routine and I've never tried to burn my energy up fast to test myself.. One day ill have to because that's what it takes to see what you can do inorder to improve...
all i want to do is win a ton of half marathons... its gonna sound dumb but why do so many people enter full or half's knowing they don't stand a chance... first of all it costs money and secondly you'll go in noticed if you're place is so far behind... unless you really really want marathon experience... but you can do that anytime weather permitted, for free...without the risk of embarrassment

I'm skeptical about anyone's claimed running time without reason to believe them, met so many people who will just say anything.
For myself I wouldn't run in any public race win or lose, but a lot of people want to do it for the group experience more than anything. Its an event

people run marathons at a really slow pace, i think your chances of real embarrasment would be low. my goal is to run one in under 7 minute miles, im not quite there yet tho.
also if you can do 2 miles in 8 minutes you're already a fairly elite long distance runner lol

the thing is... 2 miles isn't long distance... i don't even begin to break a sweat until 1.5 miles at a 9 mile per hour pace... Long distance (to me) is at mile 10 than I'm pretty much done at that pace...
I know I could do 2 miles in 8 mins if I can do 10 miles in an hour... But once I hit 2.0 I'd be done for the day..
Maybe ill post a video of my results for proof..If i ever decide to waste a day of running to do it..
