Is my Jar still good?
    #19378231 - 01/06/14 05:29 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I have a jar thats been colonizing since mid october, and STILL not done. My furnace is on the fritz and its absolutely freezing out. Im patient and letting the myc do its thing but theres areas still not colonized. Given that its january, is the jar still good? Should i still let it colonize or is there no point? Should i fruit it now in hopes of some mushies?

Usually when a jar stalls like that is contaminated.  At the verry least it will be dry as fuck by now.

Ok, also, i have 5 jars that i sterilized, then froze for about 4 days cuz of a situation. I then thawed them and inoculated them. I have them in a drawer and havnt so much as looked at them for 2 1/2 weeks, ive been out of state for holiday. Would the freezing have harmed the substrate? Or should it be fine?

Look at them....if there is no growth and the spores have not germinated start over.

Also...........

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.

Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.

The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 86F , and contams thrive.

Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

Mycelium should be exposed to ambient room light from day of inoculation as has been known for many years.  Light is not a pinning trigger until after full colonization and an increase in air is given, and even then it's a secondary pinning trigger.

Mushrooms don't use light for direction of growth.  Mushrooms grown in total darkness will still grow straight up, opposite gravity.Mushrooms turn towards the light because they are using it as a source of energy.  That's why mushrooms grown with the proper amount and spectrum of light grow much larger and heavier than mushrooms grown with insufficient light.  It's also why light is just as important during the growth phase as it is during the pinning stage.

Ill be home again in 3 days and i will check then. And i will put a little stick and press light inside the drawer for them, will that be sufficient?

Why not just place them on a shelf getting the ambient light from a window?

Is your stick light going to be on a timer?

Id rather not have stuff out in plain sight. I have roommates and im out alot. You never know who theyll have over or if theyll get curious and mess with them. I told them what im doing but they arent the best at listening when i say dont touch it.

Sometimes the best place to hide something is right out in the open.

And if you have roommates that do not respect you enough to leave your stuff alone, I would find better roommates.

And the longer you wait the worse it could get if you actually DO grow them.

Lol theyre still good friends. They just dont understand the careful procedures of cultivation. Will the stick and press light do fine? I could relocate the jars to the basement for the ambient light from window wells. But at the cost of tempurature.

Ok thanks, then ill let them be for now, ill check on them in 3 days to see if any progress has been made and check for contams. I sterilized 1/2 pints at 15 psi for 45 minutes. So i think i should be good.

I live in an apartment that is incredibly drafty and cold (they set the "Free heat" to the lowest legal number).  I got in from work today and the thermometer read 65F.

I've colonizing PF jars (1 pt, not 1/2pt) and the growth slowed to a standstill--I'm sure from the cool temperatures in here.  So I put a desk lamp with a ceramic 40W heating element (I think they use them for reptile cages) on the shelf underneath. With it on, the shelf above measures about 80F.

Anyway, since the growth is very slow, I outlined the progress with a black sharpie pen.  Then you can look every few days and see actual progress (as the white moves past the black line).

What I don't like is that I turn the lamp off every day before I head to the lab (I have this nightmare of my apartment catching fire due to a little hobby like this.  That would be professionally, err, difficult to explain) so the jars go through a serious heating/cooling cycle every day.  It's not a good situation, but it will have to do until spring I guess.

Anyway, they have never frozen solid but they were cycled through cycles that were quite cold.  It slowed them way down and added probably 2 weeks onto things, but those little bugger are pretty tough.

I'm a total newbie--just my experience growing in an arctic wasteland.

If you are that worried about the temperature. You should make a T.I.T (tub in tub incubator) thats what i use and i keep the temp at a good 74 degrees.

Thats just as suspicious lol. Im not worried about my roommates finding it, just whomever they bring over. Paranoia is my best friend, so ive been told. But i guess it wouldnt hurt to just have a few tubs stacked in my closet

When I first started growing I kept it all in my closet. I didn't even use the closet for its purpose. I also did it so i wouldn't get questioned by everyone new who walked in my room. Also if anyone does question you then you know they were going through your closet :ooo:
