Papaver Somniferum & Horse Poo?
    #19376906 - 01/06/14 11:27 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I was thinking about starting some of my poppy seeds in a pot indoors.......I was thinking of mixing some horse poo and some Sphangnum peat moss together to plant them in .......Will this soil mixture work ?

Do you plan to do indoor growing? If not, then there is no need to start them of inside. Just prepare a patch and spread seeds thinly.

The mix should be good for poppy cultivation in pots though.

Can I just put them in pots indoors and when it gets warm I would put them outside?

I'm not an expert on this by any means but I know that poppies do not like to be transplanted and would die if they were grown indoors I believe any longer than a week was what I was told.

Poppy can be grown indoors, if you have lots of light for it..

Transplanting are very tricky, even poppy doesn't care soil pH or actual soil much, it's not so picky.. however it doesn't tolerate any transplanting..

I have read a tek to transplant poppies but it should be done before young small seedlings starts to turn to plants and grown some foliage.

Right after germination, small poppy seedlings are possible to transplant with caution, otherwise it's almost impossible or at least very tricky.

Poppy will tolerate even freezing temperatures when it is at stage of young seedling, you can try sow them outdoors and they probably like to be in cool. But basically you need to grow poppy there where you sow the seeds.. I have tried to move p. somniferum and result was every plant died even I tried to be very careful with them..

I can't say accurate but max 2-3weeks old small seedling can be transplanted but older poppy grows, harder it will be to transplant.. Basically you should not transplant poppy, just sow it there where you plan to grow plant from seed to mature age.

I wasn't planning on transplanting them .....I was just going to leave them in the pots....are you saying the change in the environment from indoor to outdoor is a bad thing even if I left them in the original pots?

Hey,if you use a toothpick, and gently work them out of the soil, transplanting is just as easy as any other plant, and I have rarely lost one using this method. They key is too keep them really moist, and don't let the soil dry out until they get established well.
