If you had the choice: Gaming industry or mushroom farming?

Hi!
Growing mushrooms and creating video games are definitively the top 2 things I'd like to do for a living. Both are very hard to achieve and I'm kinda trying to do both this year. That and keeping my regular full time job.
What would you choose? I'm curious to see if you would rather grow edibles as your main salary or do another kind of un ordinary career
Have a wonderful day!

That is a good question. I've always wanted to grow mushrooms, but I think I would go with creating video games. Once my programming skills are up to par I do plan on spending a couple years making my own video game for the PC. Games have the potential to make so many people happy. Mushrooms do too, but that is more of a happiness for a certain type of person who is willing to trip. Video games are for many different types of people from many different walks of life. Plus I can actually make an honest living in the video game industry.

That's what make me want to also push thowards videogames. People WANTS to pay for games and are willing to be parts of the developpement process, it's awesome. Look at kickstarters campain. They don't all get founded, but a lot do.
I do have a small mushroom growing company, we do sales and plan to expend our farm this year. We invested a lot of time and cash in it, we're proud of ourselves and are eager to expend.
It's just, I'm passionned about both industries and the more I get old, the better I get at getting things done.
But then again, both projects require SOOOOOOO much time lol

Neither? Get an MBA.

Not a bad idea, you don't believe in these industries?
With the cost of truck delivery these days, I'd rather invest in local food than big food chains.
Or if I believe that, maybe I really need a MBA haha

I think that they're interesting careers and all. I just do not think that you will be able to make much money if you are an average mushroom grower or video game developer because if you were exceptional at those things you would likely already be doing them. Anyway, just my two cents and I could be totally wrong.

Nah you'r right. Videogame making would be more a hobby. With good partners it could pay off a bit though.
I'm a good mushroom grower, not as good as MANY people here (biggest mushroom forum of the world, lol) I'm good enough to make money. We're definitively one of the top where we live. Time will tell how good we do in face of the competition.
It's not time yet to quit our day job. Not this summer, maybe the next one.

i´d rather have a manual job than a computer job so there you have it.
if i could do both i´d push forward with the grow company, when it´s self sufficient you might get enough time to dedicate towards game development

That's how I see it. I think it's also about the fact that I work full time on my regular Job. The company is no more in the early beginning of the startup phase, so maybe the excitement of the beginning is a bit gone. Now it's more like (a super exciting) second job... And a lot of work.
I don't have much time for hobbies. Mycologie is my hobby, but it's with all the physic work I do, I need a bit of rest. I'd like to play with a new project too.
There is just not enough time in a day

Which could be good or bad, depending.

i'm in the environment. don't do anything that has to do with the environment. the jobs are too few and far between, they suck, the people are assholes, and they make you spend all your money on native american hookers or they fire you.
stick with finance, engineering or IT!!!

Since the iPad came out, I sometimes hate myself for not having become a stock trader.
Spending you day drinking fresh pressed juice, trading stocks on your tablet while you workout on a stationary bicycle.

Is that what you seriously think stock traders do? Probably for the best that you didn't do it. You are also aware that video game creation requires very advanced programming and mathematical skills as well, right?

It was a joke about the stock trading. lol
Yeah I very well understand how much work and how complicated it is to make a videogame. Its SO much work, thats why I made this thread. I work way too much on too many projets at the time.

It depends on how much work I'd actually have to put in at the mushroom farm, and what the money was like.
I'd much rather cultivate mushrooms then many other things including being a game developer.
But if I gotta put in 80hrs a week of picking mushrooms to only make ~100,000 a year, forget it.
But if in was more the business side of the mushroom farm, and just made sure everything was going smoothly, and did stuff like agar work, cloning, making lc's, testing new strains, and shit like that and made decent pay I would definitely choose that.
