Mycobag instructions fail?
    #19375963 - 01/06/14 06:22 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey all,

from the time that my two already inoculated bags I ordered, got green mold (I'm suspectin penicilin according to pictures of mold contams on these sides), I'm wondering what I did wrong. So after reading a lot about all the possible teks, I started thinking that the instructions they gave me, were really bad.

First of all, I ordered fully made up, inoculated mycobags. The instructions said the only thing I have to do, is to keep these bags at a temp range from 20-24°C and spray them with water every or every other day. They should be in a place that receives enough light, but not in direct sunlight.

What I think is wrong with this picture: The bags I received had no grown mycelium in them. So I had to wait for that. So my question is this: if I open these bags every day and spray them with water, isn't that like a totally welcomed condition for contams to get in? I guess it's the same as openning the jars before the signs of full colonization. Shouldn't I rather leave the bag unopened until it gets fully colonized and then start spraying it when in fruiting stage?

Oh and one more thing: my mycelium got green (but only on top!) but now I noticed the shrooms started growing? I read somewhere that the shrooms won't grow if the mycelium's been previously contaminated. I guess I should toss that bag anyway? I'm afraid to open it for the mold spores to get out.

Thanx for your replies, I much appreciate it

Don't open the bags until they're 100% colonized. After that you don't have to worry about whether or not contaminants are getting in them, the mushroom mycelium will protect the substrate. If you want to wait until they start pinning that's fine but opening the fully colonized bags to increase the fresh air they're getting will help them pin sooner. Misting only needs to be done when the substrate appears dry, and how often that happens will depend on how much fresh air you giving them.

Thanx a lot, so I was right! What the hell, why are they giving me such stupid instructions with my order?
I'm planning to make a fruiting chamber with perlite on the bottom... So I'm gonna put the fully colonized box out of the bag and place it in the shotgun. I believe that should do?

But the problem is, the instructions also say I should submerge the inoculated box in water as soon as I receive it, and then leave it in for 12 hours. Again, a way to get contams...

Don't knnow. It sounds like instruction for grow kit that should have came with fully colonized spawn. Were there separate bags, like one with grains and one with compost?

No, they were not separate... I got what you see:
I have no idea what they are made of, it doesn't say!

Already I see the confusion.

The white stuff on the bottom is the spawn it's fully colonized and that's how it should have looked when you got it or at least covered in mycelium. The material on the top is a non-nutritious casing layer, it doesn't need to be colonized when you fruit it.

So what they sent you was either uncolonized spawn or contaminated spawn if nothing but mold grew. In which case I'd say you got screwed. But you might want to be sure it's mold your seeing and not just the mycelium bruising. Green mold has a very powdery texture. I have some pics here if you need something to compare it to http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=17410120&page=0&vc=1#17410120

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I don't know if it could be bruising, so I'm pasting a picture (hope it could be seen clearly, no greater size is allowed).
What do you think? I must say, that it's like this for 3 days now... nothing changed. I just went over the grey/green/blue stuff with a wet cotton pad, but nothing got stuck on it. There was quite a strong amoniak like smell when I openned the bag. However, I did open it after it's been closed for 3 days. Let me also say this: when I watered the thing 4 days ago, I saw water dripping on the mycelium (a leaking water spray). And next morning it changes colour... is it possible that the water could be the cause for that?

Maybe I can't see it that clearly. Some of it does seem to have a bluish color to it. Were there small pins there originally that turned like that?

I guess if it smells mushroomy and not like dirt, it hasn't changed in 3 days, and there's an apparently healthy pin growing out the center of it I would give it some time and keep an eye on it. I have seen mycelium bruise like though it looks pretty suspicious.

the couloured stuff was white mycelium before.. I didn't see any pins there though. It smells mushroomy now, when I fanned it. But before it smelled like amoniak air.

Mold usually starts off white as well and turns color over. I guess I can't really tell you what to with it though since I'm not entirely certain what it is. If it's any help though a tiny bit of mold isn't a huge deal if that's what it is. The problem is it never stays tiny so if you feel certain it's mold I'd just toss it and complain to the vendor you got it from.

I took 2 closeby pics ... the wet thing on is water that I sprayed earlier.

Hope that helps more

I'm receiving another free mycobag tomorrow. I'm wondering whether I have to pour the water in and leave it in for 12 hours right after I receive the box (the instructions say so). Remember, I'm receiving the box that is NOT FULLY INOCULATED. Should I rather leave it until then and dunk it in water after?
Thanx!

A couple hours should do it. Be sure to drain the water as best you can afterward. As long as it's just the casing layer on top that's not colonized it's fine to soak it and fruit.

Thanx! Do I have to scrape off the casing layer afterwards?
