i wish this shit wasnt so hard to detect, but my bud thinks he has cobweb ontop of his casings...he started giving them light and cooler temps when you can just barely se mycelium sticking out, but they also started to have a greyish covering on top of his 50/50, shrooms are still coming up on the opposite side of the casing, where there is no grey stuff...it doesnt have that really whispy look to it either. Is this cob? if it is, he planned on cutting it out and spraying it with h20/h202 but he doesnt want to harm the guys that are growing on the other side, is this a good idea, or should he just cut it out, and put fresh sterilized casing back in there?

can you post any pics ? if it is the dreaded cobweb you should cut it out and try to save the other half of the casing. are there any pins at all on the questionable side ?

No, it doesnt look anything like that, it's just a very thin grey color ontop of the the casing mis, it hasnt grown in a few days though. I looked at other pics of this, and cobweb actually looks like cobweb...connected together as if it was a weave of mold, mine isnt, it just looks like a very thin layer of mycelium, so thin that it's kinda grey. No, i cant post any pics, and no, there are no pins growing in the ? area

well usually cobweb grows really fast and it can get out of hand in a flash so my guess would be to just wait to see what happens. from what i've read about cobweb is that it is a common household mildew or something like that. the spores are airborn so pay more attention to the air quality when you're doing sterile work. i didn't have much luck trying to fight the stuff off so anything that had cobweb just got tossed. i even did some experimentation on it. i think some of us should spend some time studying up on these common pests and learn what kills them.

I had what looked like cobweb on my last cake. I gave it a few days and it didn't take over. Shortly afterwards it seemed to dissapear and a flush commenced. So far I'm thinking that for some reason we can get a thin layer of mycelium do this. I don't know why and would like to hear any theories on it. There are some good pics of it here at the shroomery.

It's hard to tell but i'd say i've got some dried mycelium on top. Is it the white growing or receding ?

That cake is about three months old. It colonized perfectly, pooped out a large mushroom when birthed, and then didn't do anything else at all until this white fluff started showing up. I moved the location to more light and gave it more moisture. Now it has some real interesting shrooms coming out of it. Look similar to amanita muscaria with the white spots on the caps. I've read that is mycelium though. The top half is just mycelium that has gotten a bit dried out.

I don't believe that's cobweb, just new mycelium covering dried mycelium. Mycelium often recovers that way when you put the cake in a more moist environment, i've seen it happen sometimes. MAIA
