See thats what i was thining to, but i havent seen them non abort like that, i thought they were more funky looking, at least the ones ive seen online, never seen it in person. The jacked up mycelium and base of the fruits does indicate a parasitic species it seems. and thats the only white one i can think of. It had crossed my mind, but i dismissed it. I hope it turns out to be that.

Thanks joust. Clone in progress   any guess on species of Clitocybe?

Blue, I would agree that is close but this was not a hardwood forest and the interior of the "mass" they were fruiting out of was not white.  I am also west of the Rockies.

For you brotha.

I figured with the extra upload space I'd post a few randoms that I took before the blizzard let loose it's icy chaos. Ganoderma and Conocybe filaris.

A wicked dead sheep, it was gnarly and grotesque but interesting nonetheless.

Conocybe filaris = Pholiotina rugosa and there are at least around 5 different annulate Pholiotina spp. found in CA, there are probably more than 1 in Oregon, Washington & BC too.  Did you happen to save the specimens?

Yes I did save it.  I tried keying it out and that's what I came up with.  Although the umbos were really pronounced on this species.

To confirm Pholiotina you would need to see the cheilocystidia and maybe the pileipellis structure, although it looks pretty promising if not certain already.  For species determination you would need to look at the cheilocystidia & spores.  Unfortunately lots of mycologists see a Pholiotina and are more than happy to just pass it off as Conocybe filaris or P. rugosa and even include it in field guides as if its the only option...  Using the European key in Flora Agaricina Neerlandica vol 6, 5 of the 7 annulate Pholiotina listed seem to work in the states (Based off only a handful of scoped collections), however lots of work still needs to be done with them.  Also, I'm not really sure its clear if the American versions of P. rugosa & vexans are different species or are even the same as the European versions, in Europe they should have a different spore range, all the American collections I have seen seem to have spores in the upper range of P. rugosa or lower range of P. vexans or in other words, right in the middle...

If you want, you can upload the pictures on MO, then label the bag containing the specimens with the MO observation number and then send it to me and I will scope it as soon as I get around to it which is probably not any time soon...

Jeez,  I spoke in an uneducated manner by labeling it Conocybe, I apologize and thank you for the information.

I will work on the picture uploads and getting a mailer set up.  I can put some of that sheep in there too for you if you want   I'll :pm: you

If your overwhelmed with material I understand.  I'm buying a laptop hopefully in the next few days when the weather clears and then the scope is next so hopefully I can start being a responsible mycophile.

You can call them Conocybe if you want, I'm not sure what genus they belong in is really settled yet.  I personally prefer following the European experts who split Pholiotina from Conocybe, at least until it is clear they should be called something else.  And yea, I'm pretty overwhelmed, so many dried collections!
