Seen people who just sterilize there verm/coir mix, but other people pasturize and claim sterilizing only breeds contams. What's better is my question, and is there a certain mix that's better?

Pasteurize it!! 50:50 plus hydrated lime. Peat:verm plus 1teaspoon per cup of peat. You can add an additional teaspoon of calcium carbonate if you want. You said casing right?

Sure it is, especially verm. Coco husk is not THAT nutritious to mushrooms. It's the fluffiness, fineness, and water-holding capability that make it so wonderful as a 'bulk' sub, but those things make it quite nice as a casing layer too. Soil, pH-treated peat, verm mix, and others may be a bit better but that doesn't mean that "coir is not a casing material"

Soil and microwave. There's another (easier) way.

I believe OP was talking about using it as a bulk substrate and not a casing layer......
No one really uses that mix as casing layer material.

The title of the thread is "prepping CASING layer" And maybe you should have said "hardly anyone that posts often recently"

It was OPs first post, and newbs get casing layers and bulk substrates mixed up all the time.
Until he posts back what he actually meant, there is no point in going back and forth like this.

I thought it was casing, where you have a bottom layer of verm then broken up colonized material followed by verm and I thought coir but if peat moss for the top layer as well. Just trying to make sure I don't contam my first harvest.

If you are casing grain, use 1 part verm: 1 part peat moss as the casing. Measure out how many cups of peat moss you use and add 1 teaspoon of hydrated lime for each cup of peat. Mix well Then add the verm. mix well. Then hydrate it to carrying capacity. Then pasturize it. Then add it to the top of your grain. Some folks use coir as a casing ingredient but the recipe above will be best for your particular application.

Yep, he meant casing...
Though the bottom layer is something that's not typically done anymore. Might as well do the reservoir effect by mixing the grains and verm since you're already there. It will give a better result than casing broken-up and lain-out grains, which cannot be easily watered.
