Straw bale with mold on surface, still usable?
    #19373279 - 01/05/14 02:33 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I stacked a straw bale with a plastic container on top of it.  The surface has a little mold where the plastic was, not very much at all.  If I'm planning to pasteurize and do a straw log what should I do?  It wouldn't be that easy to remove because the mold is not on either end but on the side of the bale.

Alright can do.

If I do a straw basket outdoors and try to fruit it with 68F average temps with 55-70 % humidty (70 if it rains and is cloudy) do you think I would be ok or is higher humidity needed?

Awesome, sorry to have to ask so many nub questions but:

with a laundry basket, what percentage of the surface of the tub would need to be "holes".  I drilled out a solid plastic tub and about 50% of it is holes, but the basket RR shows is maybe closer to 75%.

Also, how will I know when to hydrate the basket, when the surface is dry?  Should I mist with a spray bottle to hydrate it?

This is a new tek for me so I'm trying to nail down all the details, sometimes they can make or break the project.

:mushdance:

<- is a newb totally...but I didn't see where you mentioned what specifically you were growing, so my first though about your second question is "They all have different growing parameters...so that cannot possibly be answered." of course then someone else answered it, who has like 12,000 posts and obviously knows way more than I do.... Is it assumed that it will be oysters, because it is a straw basket? but then I've noticed oysters have different growing parameters too, depending on the strain right?

the more holes you put, the more you have to worry about it drying out... half the surface should give you plenty of air exchange and places to fruit. Some people like to put their spawn in a garbage bag and then in the basket, and poke holes when time to fruit to prevent drying out prematurely.

Oysters, the garbage bag liner sounds like a really good idea.

theres a tek on here somewhere if you look around, but its pretty straightforward. Use a clear bag so you can see when its colonized.
