Does anyone here meditate? If so why do you do it? Have you had any mental break throughs? I'm interested in starting and not sure how

Try taking a walk in nature randomly and noticing the silence
then sit down straight back, accept, relax, focus on breathing in and out slowly - very slowly just keep focusing on breathing close eyes, keep doing the same
dont expect anything
for me meditation is about dampening all those excessive thoughts we get all the time, no stress
just close eyes at any time when feeling stressed
let all worries disappear
same in nature, no worries :-)

I meditate. I do it to try and notice and be aware of things going on around me and in my mind -- or something like that.
I've never had any mental breakthroughs or anything. I've realized somethings here and there about how my mind plays tricks on me and the illusions that I create, but I've never broken through to like some new level of consciousness.
If you're interested in getting started, I'd recommend just trying to sit for about 15 minutes. If you can, and if you're real serious about it, you could bum around and try and find a meditation teacher that jives with ya. There are plenty of intros to meditation on Google and even here on the S&M. Best of luck mate, and feel free to ask any more questions. There are others here who are more experienced and who could probably answer your questions better.

I've just started doing it recently but it's definitely helped me be more mindful and peaceful. It gives a moment before reacting to situations where I can just sort of calm my self and think about things. Made me more mindful and calmer overall I'd say.
Also want to add that it has been proven to have benefits psychologically. Meditation requires nothing you don't already have, it's free

Cool study. Never knew that.
I thought that the first comment in that thread was fantastic, and relates directly to the OP:
Quote:
I try not to not get too caught up in the pedagogy of the spiritual aspect. I focus on the breath for 20mins a day and due to human nature I miss a day here and there. However, this has been the most powerful and self-helpful(?) thing I have ever done. I wouldn't even consider doing 15 minutes, to someone who is new, just sit for 5 minutes and try to focus on the sensation of breathing. Thoughts will come and go and sometimes there will be lots and sometimes few. Just see what arises as what is and go back to the breath. I wouldn't say "try not to think" as much as notice the thinking as it is and when you realize you are caught in your thinking just head back to the breath, as pizz_moist mentioned. Turning the mind off isn't really practical as the mind is wherever it is and is always thinking.

I meditate with crystals and stones. I find that it relaxes me a lot more and puts into an out of body experience more than NOT meditating with a crystal or stone.
I do chakra meditations too. I visualize the energy in the form of different things.

get high, lay down and listen to music. don't follow up on any thoughts. just stick with the music and feel into the LIFE that sustains you. I havent had any breakthroughs with this because it can get kind of scary and I jump out.

More breakthroughs on meditation that psycadellica.

I've completed a ten day course here Vipassana center ( the entire stay is completely free ) over a hundred hours of meditating. Good technique, Was clear headed for a few months, then some shit hit the fan and stopped practicing. Will probably go back soon after a second grow of cubensis. First grow was a month before the course in oct'2012. Shrooms and meditation do help, no doubt.

Drumming does the trick! Made right, it emmits a frequency altering your brainwawes.. it is said.. one using drumming gets to the same brainwawes in thirthy minutes opposed to the munk who sits fpr six hours.

I do my best to meditate at least twice a day, when I wake up and before I am going to bed, and then any other time during the day I feel the need to meditate, but at least twice. As far as what I do when I meditate a lot of the time I just relax myself and my breathing. But other times I like to guide myself to a place during my meditation. What I mean by this is I might have an area in my mind that I like to go to a lot when I meditate. It's a beautiful pond in the middle of a mystical woods, I don't want to describe it too much, because it's my special place.

just got back into it just recently. the last week has been interesting. i try to do it immediately upon waking as that is when the mind is the most "loose".. the stream of thought isn't as rapid, it's easier to navigate the calmer stream. one really interesting experience.. i was meditating for 10 minutes then fell back asleep, but didn't know i was asleep and dreaming and was still meditating. i came out of the meditation/lucid dream thinking that only a few minutes had passed, only to look at the clock to find that an hour had passed! definitely one of those whhaaaaaatt moments.

IME sitting up straight is good if you haven't just woken up, otherwise if laying down the mind tends to wander more.
I've realized something lately though. I find that I'm more attracted to meditation immediately upon waking IF I just simply remain laying down in my bed while doing it. This way, there's no possibility of the mind intervening and saying "gahh, I gotta get up, sit up and do this". I can remain in my bed, in a vegetative, blissful sleepy state and slip into a cozy meditative sleepy state. It's really easy to maintain awareness like this, surprisingly. And naturally, when I wake up in the morning, I'm more drawn towards meditating because it's hassle free and feels so good.
After 10 years of meditation, this is an extremely useful realization that I've stumbled onto and highly recommend giving it a try.
