Man, go for the Guild. They do cost a fair bit (1,000) and up. But its well worth it for the nice thick tone that Guild is known for. They can be hard to find, at least if you want any decent selection. But look around. You won't be sorry.

You probably want something a lot better, but I'll sell you a Fender F-210 from the late 70's/ early 80's that's in perfect conditon for $125 (it was between 4-500 new).

This is an old `77 MK-81 Gibson that i sold on e-bay to a guy in Japan and i dont miss it because it was a shallow fretted hard player...I played an old mid `80s Taylor an it was a joy to play w/incredible warm tone....I really miss not having a Acoustic sitting next to me but i am not gonna clutter myself with a bunch of pretty good guitars again...

If you really want to connect to your next instrument, I suggest you build it yourself. It's extremely difficult, but rewarding.

I just got a new acoustic about a year ago and am in love with it. It's a Gibson Workingman's 45, I love the tone.

I play mostly fingerstyle, and found that dreadnoughts, though cool sounding with chords, don't get as good a balance with the high strings.

I have a lower end Martin now, a smaller sized guitar. Its very nice.

I got a Seagull. I am not the most serious guitar player but I love having it around to strum some chords and pluck out a few notes, I've always wanted to get serious but have never dedicated myself to it. I payed 325$ for an m-6 gloss and it plays and sounds better than anything I've ever handled that was under a grand(not that it's alot). It's perfect guitar for the not so serious guitarist.

Seagulls are a very fine guitar made in Canada and are probably the best you can get in the $300-$500 range...I had forgotten about them.

Get a Rainsong Guitar. Pure graphite but way freaking sweeter than any popular wood guitar. They are so versatile and the action is super nice. Or you could always contact Roberto-Venn in Phoenix www.roberto-venn.com) and ask some of the students there if they would be willing to build a guitar for you. Don't buy a first though. While they will play sweeter than just about any Martin or Gibson that you could buy the second guitars are always WAY better. I'm sure that for 1500 or so you could have a nicely figured guitar built to your specs and it will be better than just about any popular, Custom Shop or otherwise.
