yellow developing
    #1937247 - 09/21/03 06:35 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My friend got some spores and innoculated ten jars. After almost four weeks, the jar showing the most growth suddenly developed a small yellowish section, however it is on the exact opposite side of the tremendous mycelium growth. So my question is, can he simply cut out the section of the cake that's growing well and fruit it in its own terrarium and possibly grow to maturity?

describe the yellowish section in more detail.
it could just be harmless anabolic waste, or it
could be a contam.
other then that, you dont need to 'cut out' the uncolonized
section, if you take it out of the jar, the uncolonized
substrate should crumble off with enough agitation.
after that, you may want to dunk overnight adding some h202.

The yellowish section looks exactly like the healthy mycelium aside from the color. Could you also give me more info on using hydrogen peroxide, I'm an amateur and trying to learn as much as possible.

sounds like your cake is drying out.
if the cake is fully colonized, take it out of the jar
and place it in a bucket, fill the bucket with bottled
water and place something (a plate) on top of the cake so it stays
submerged. pour a *glug* *glug* of h202 in the bucket.
let it sit submerged for 12 hours.
after, take it out, pat try w/ clean towel & place it in yer terrarium.

Hi, I'm also a newb concerned about one of my jars that has yellow in it. It is in a rye jar of three that were innoculated on the 26th Aug. The jar was doing great and is/was nearly colonised, but then about a week ago I noticed that a partially uncolonised patch on the bottom had developed a manky yellowness to it. When I tilted the jar on an angle the yellowness drained down leaving behind healthy looking mycelium. Incidentally, this jar is the only one that has a rusty lid, could that be a factor? I also thought it might be from the rye itself but 40oz said something about anabolic waste? I can't really get rid of the liquid without opening up the jar. Any advice?
