Stalled Pink Oyster
    #19372184 - 01/05/14 10:26 AM (10 years, 26 days ago)

I have about 9 bags of pink oyster that have stalled at around 50-75% colonization for about 2 weeks now. They are on supplemented sawdust that was sterilized. The bags have no contamination and if anything they seem a bit dry. This was my first attempt spawning grain to a bulk substrate, I think my spawn rate was to low. The temperature has been steady around 20 C.

Any suggestions for getting them going? Fruit as is? Add a small amount of sterile water? There really has been no movement for a while now.

Thanks!

What kind of sterilzation/pasteurization did you use for the sawdust?

I have never supplemented for oysters and the myc just screams through straw. And usually starts to fruit in 10-12days after spawning.

Don't open the bags!  Since the sub was sterilized it will contam immediately if you open it. Try shaking it up a bit. Increase temps to 75-80 degrees. Wait and see. It will colonize even if it is on the dry side.

... and next time grow your pinks on pasteurised straw!

But also take a careful look, pinks have a very light mycelium so it may in fact be fully colonised. Open just one and see what happens.

Pink oyster is thin and wispy compared to other oyster species. If it looks some what colonized look closer and see if its just really fine. If the myc has started turning pink its ready to start fruiting. If it definitely has not colonized everything, try as AV suggested and shake up the bag and sort of pack it back into shape. Don't open it.

Dang Solarity beat me to it. Check the thicker colonized areas for pink tinting.

Thanks for the tips guys, I found some pink tinting here and there. On closer inspection it looks like there was some loose sawdust stuck to the bag hiding colonized areas. Going to fruit half of them and see how it goes, i'll post some pictures if all goes well.
