African Violets

So,I've actually started to really get into these little fellas, and after well over two months,my cuttings finally took root! Looks like my mother is also pushing out some blooms, and I can't wait to see what color they are! I'd like to add that my mother plant looked like crap when I received her,and now I've babied her,and she's thriving:-)Anybody else grow thees wonderful plants, which I found out, aren't even in the violet family at all,go figure my cuttings severely wilted last night, because I had the heat cranked, but hopefully they will recover.

I would also like to add, that that Miracle Grow African Violet food, and soil,is totally unnecessary,as well,as them saying not to spray the leaves, and to only water from the bottom.I don't adhere to any of these things, and mine looks 10 times better than my Grandmother's,who swears by all that crap!Mine gets sprayed daily, and I always water from the top.I also give her a dose of fertilizer double the recommended strength.

Yeah, they are great plants! I've got several dozen of them, about 6 or 7 different varieties, they are just starting to flower in full force. Nice, low maintenance plants with very pretty flowers!

I tried rooting some cuttings awhile back in vermiculite but they were overtaken by mold. What method do you use?

It's funny that you bring these up. My grandmother has been wanting one for years and finally found one at a nursery not long ago.

I just take a leaf cutting with as much stem as I can get,and stick it in a little container of water for a few days.I also keep them nice and moist by misting them a few times daily with a spay bottle. Then, after a few days,I'll take, and just bury the stem down in some soil a few inches, and in a couple of months, you'll get roots.I haven't lost one yet with this method, but this is actually only my third time trying it You know what? These are expensive plants,so I started thinking, hmmmmm, maybe I'll cultivate, and try to sell a whole grip of these guys to the local Nurseries/Grocery stores around here I'm going to start up some more cuttings soon, because they take so long to root, and I want to have some ready for spring.

You should do some cross pollinations. You get some neat colors and patterns coming out.
It generally takes 6 months for the pod to ripen and you can harvest seed, then from sowing its another 6 months or so to get blooming plants.
its a long time, but pretty cool to see the fruits (er...flowers) of your labor.

yeah, its cool. I started with 2 plants that were given to me and my first batch of seedlings gave me about 8 plants with different colors and flower petal shapes.
the seeds are tiny, and when you germ them they start off really small and slow growing, but they pick up speed as they get bigger.
you shouldnt have a problem with them though if you can do cactus seeds.
I will see if I can find my pics and post them

Here are the pics of some of the seedlings I got from a cross I made a few years ago.... well, I guess about 10 years ago. I think 2 or three of them are still around, at my grandma's and my mom's.
what I think is cool is the diversity you get out. the parents were a purple and a white that someone had given me. I just recently found the packet of leftover seeds. they are tiny, so I'm not really sure if there are any in there or if its just plant dust, but I think I'll give them a go. I'll post pics of those flowers in a year or so....

Nice! I like the pure white color. You know, since these are typically propagated by cuttings, it wouldn't surprise me if you were able to get self sees out of that one plant if you'd find some nice diversity in the offspring. Don't wait till you get another one. Get some pollinating done now and you'll have pods developing already by the time you get another plant to cross with.
And keep us updated! And what color is the phal in the background? Those can be cool too
