Colonized Spawn for Reishi and King Oyster

Here are some quart jars I've colonized. 7 jars for each strain - King Oyster & Reishi. They were colonized doing a grain to grain transfer from 1 colonized jar of each strain. Pieces of colonized agar were used for the 1st jars.
The oysters are 5 weeks ahead of the reishi. As you can see I used more wbs for the reishi. Looking good right?!

Looks good, you might have trouble getting the spawn out of those jars if you let those oysters consolidate to much longer (I have heard the same for Reishi). I know I had to use a knife to break up my Pinks after forgetting about the for a week.

The reishi looks good but I'd spawn it asap. Those kings look WAY thick, good luck!

I like to wait until the mycelium completely covers the grain. I will definitely have to use a knife to break up the colonized grain. I'm thinking another month for the oysters before I do a spawn run.

If you wait another month, I doubt you will be able to break apart the grains at all, they'll just turn to mush. But good luck!

I can't break apart the grain now. I'll knife it out and grain to spawn run later. The master jars from agar got even thicker before i did a grain to grain transfer. The result is a very fast colonization rate because there is so much more white fuzz (mycelium) to get the sterilized grain started.

reishi is fast either way but it's preferable to not have it turn all leathery on the grain or sawdust spawn.

My oysters haven't even reached the food source at the bottom of a couple jars. I'd be shorting myself if I didn't let the mycelium complete cover all the grain. I want my mycelium to reach the kernal of the seed. IMO, the mycelium is more likely to take on new food source if the colonized wbs is so thick.

So I guess you didnt shake the jars at 30-40%, makes colonization so much faster. It also helps to make sure during g2g that you give the new jars a good shaking so that even myc growth takes place.
The problem with overcolonized spawn is that the grains are hard to break up and evenly distribute when applying to your substrate (IMO)
You should be alright as oysters are aggressive.

rather shake the jars to distribute colonized grains around.
i would want to use the oyster and reishi spawn within 4-5 weeks of spawning from your master jar otherwise it starts to change growth phase and for the reishi becomes very hard to remove from the jar.

cool, good thoughts. I find that sometimes after shaking the jars the cultures don't recover and rot instead. I will get on it!

If that happens, they were contaminated in most cases (oysters or reishi, definitely severely contaminated or they would recover). Check your culture or sterile procedure

^^Very good point. They won't stall unless there is some contaminate present. Oysters and reishi should not take much more than two weeks to colonize. A good shake at 30% after week one and they are usually good to go by week two. Digging spawn out of a jar just introduces another vector for contam. Spawning early while the myc is still vigorous has always worked best for me.
