Chili pepper grow 2014

hi everybody !
on the 20.12.2013 i planted 9 kinds of chili plants, two seeds each to kick off my little babies for 2014 as i didnt have any homegrown chilis last year, a terrible situation which had to be changed !
its a funny mix of peppers, most of them unknown and i got the seeds out of fresh pods i scavenged from a commercial grower (with permission ofcoz) last year and stored dry eversince, so here is what is in the mix, all pictures from the plants i took them from except for a "lemondrop" and a "mild habanero"

Dope! I'll be following this for sure.
What latitude are you at? I'll be starting peppers here in the US in mid feburary.
I'll be doing chili's as well this year. Had a killer crop of tabascos last year.

central europe, as our "summer season" is not long/hot enough for chinense varieties such as habaneros, i need to start them indoors if i want to have crops.
speaking of which, check out their nursery

nice great idea on the hanging light stand
I've got an 4 tier rack with flouro lights built in that works great for seedlings - picked it up on craigslist, super old school from the 70's. It'd make a great martha if it wasn't made of wood.

YES. DId a couple of these last year. One of my favorites. Love the nasally horseradish overtones to this pepper. Will be popping these off this year.

ok so i have two cayenne plants which are anuums and outgrow my other seedlings because of that, so i made them their own little growchamber to stretch and develop as they like it.
reason for it being, that i had to raise my fluoro tubes for the other seedlings all the time as those were outgrowing them in hight and as u know, light penetration of fluoros isnt exactly great so BAM in their own chamber they went !
said chamber is to the left in the bottom shelf:

and a closeup of their buttermilk canisters plus makeshift reflector:

and the mugshot:

guys in the meantime i thought about something, i am growing my peppers on a balcony and unfortunately it does not quite get as much sunshine as i would like it to so daily temperatures arent too high either. i dont quite know how much temperature as a matter of fact plays a role in the ripening of chilis, but it got me thinking that maybe its more important than i thought ? all my previous chilis have been grown on an immensely sunny balcony hot as hell so i never really thought about that factor but now that i moved ... id appreciate your input ! would it be worth it to invest in something like this once i can move them outdoors in some months ?

in my eyes it would definitely be a lot warmer in that thingie in the limited hours of direct sunshine my plants would get, so i am curious if it would help with them actually ripening in the limited light hours ?
my whole idea stems from videos of commercial farms that build extra "hothouses" for their chili peppers.. or am i worrying about this to much ? its mostly the chinense varieties that give me headaches you know

I'm checking this one out. I'm pretty sure peppers love warmer temps, and that green house might be what you need. I'm getting my garden started here soon enough.

aaah good to hear, thanks. the plants will all be repottet this weekend, expect an update with pictures.
in the meantime, something very cool happened today as i went to my favorite hole-in-the-wall thai place to eat, i seem to be one of the few regulars who orders his stuff "very hot/spicey", a rare thing in central europe where people arent used to hot stuff, but being the chilihead i am i do love some hot tang to it
well anyways, today just after i had placed my order she came back to me with a little gift and said "present from the kitchen" how cute is that ! it really made me smile as i thought about buying one of their little bags (5€) for a while to store my dried chilis and seeds in, and now she gave it to me as a present - hihi, seems that my appreciation for their (hot) food delights them
check it out ! can someone read thai and know what it means ? i think this was a very lovely gesture !

Man, life's been nuts, but pretty good otherwise. I'm planning a salsa garden in 5 gallon buckets. Peppers, chilis, tomatos, maybe some cucumbers. I'm also getting a spot in the yard ready for blueberries. Great to see you man, and I'll be watching this thread.

Yeah, I'd like the use of the whole yard meself to grow all my veggies. I'm considering buying the house I'm in tho, and once that happens I'll do it up proper.

this was a bit unexpected i must say haha, but i think when they start to get a bit "rootbound" its the best time to repot.
this growth spurt though in one week, shit man, have never seen something quite like this !

hrmpf ! even though those three little "late bloomers" are somewhat cute, they are pissing me off a little. i have to keep them in the center of my little three tube lightning rig in order to give them the most light exposure and sop the stretch they would give me if they remain on the sides of the lights ... well, even though this is no biggie it is a bit annoying i must say .... and i am thinking about enlarging my light setup a little bit and distance the tubes a tad more away from eachother as right now they distribute light unevenly ... so yeah, thats news

chilis, depending on strains, can take up to a couple of weeks for sprouting. no light is needed for germination / sprouting.

tied the plant down with a toothpick as it grew far to fast and tall in comparison to the others, you see it mangled stem which, gldady, shoots roots if its in touch with soil

You'll need a lot of sun and heat, the greenhouse will help a lot.
My grandmother grows super hot chili's from Vietnam in zone 8a. She starts them in March, just in her window, no lights. Then grows them in large pots outside after all danger of frost. When the weather starts to turn cold she tents them with clear giant plastic bags, and uncovers them during the warmest part of the day. She takes them inside if there are peppers still on the vine and even eats the green peppers and they are a lot hotter than the ripe!
She says the peppers will still grow if there is little sun, but they will not ripen and turn color if it isn't hot and sunny enough.
I have seeds from last year's peppers and I'm going to try and grow them in zone 8b. I'm excited, I hope I don't mess up. They have such a delicious flavor, but are really hot.
Your thread is awesome! I'm excited to watch your peppers grow!

they are bolivian rainbows.
i have removed them from the light, and have focused more on the temp sense it droped to the 50s today.
also started a handful in peat pods... but i dont know how that is going to transfer to hydroponics...
deal with that later..

yes, as soon as they are up, LIGHTS (hooked as in the hooks came up and stripped the seedshell, you do not want helmetheads)
if they came up with the seedshell still on, it wont fall off, reseed.

just to give u an idea, i had my fluro tubes less than an inch away from the seedlings from the start.
it strongly sounds to me if something else went way wrong as its nearly impossible to roast them with fluros.

keep your t5 light off them at least a foot at first. gentle fan like a clip on one away from the seedlings to stimulate sturdy stems.
try saying that 5x fast...

the key is to be close enough not to cause stretching but far enough away to not burn them. test with the back of your hand if it feels warmer than lukewarm that's too much for that little seedling. a gentle fan action will make the stems strong enough to not have that little seedling do a face plant. staking is to be avoided if possible.

Cut the top off. Just under where they start the Y shape. This will increase lateral branching, which gives better yields

Yeah, this is what my grandma does. You get a big bushy plant and more fruits.
My Vietnamese hot peppers have sprouted. I'm going to put them under lights this week.
The flowers are gorgeous! It's exciting to even watch other people's plants grow.

dont mean this is a bashing so dont take it wrong, but seeing how much troubles you have had with them already, i suggest to you instead of hydro to starting them conventionally in soil. as i do not even know the problems you mentioned.

my Carolina reaper seeds have yet to germinate, and I know some can take longer than others, but I have poppy seeds and morning glory that already have well-established root systems and they were sown at the same time in the same conditions.
I'll give them some time, but I'm beginning to suspect the person I got the pepper seeds from didn't know how to harvest them properly when they were fully developed.

Odd curled leaf above the fruit.
How hot is that one? Looks Habanerish. Why do Habs disagree with me and make me hiccup like hell? I can't/won't eat them.
Whereas chilis and serranos I can pretty much wolf down...

Is nobody else growing chilis this year? ive read up a lot about hydro by now and seeing how peppers naturally branch out anyway i think i will try a little ebb and flow habanero screen of green this winter for shits and giggles
Obviously it will outgrow the available space at some point but boy could i care less

I sowed my seeds around 6 weeks ago.
Those ones grew pretty fast but there are alot of them that are far behind and much smaller but still healthy.
I got lots of hope placed into two tiny chocolate ghost pepper starts that only have one leaf each so far but they look healthy enough just a slow start.

Those things grow fast. Mine are 1 month and still quite small. I will plant them outside mid may, after mid may frost should not occur. Can't wait to taste the round variety I have. Also wondering if the 2yr old cayenne will be an even bigger yielder then last year.

fluoros did the trick for me. It's an annuum variety , those are said to be somewhat harder to overwinter. I thought it was quite easy to overwinter though. I trimmed back the roots of the plant and cut the foliage back almost entirely. I keep it small and keep pruning it back during winter. I'm moving it to the windowsill this week to adapt it to sunlight. If the temps are alright it will go outside in a week or 2 in a larger container, a smart pot to be precise (I'll bring it inside at night). Mid may I'm going to plant it into soil protected by a plastic tarp I've made.
Got my stash of fertiliser ready for the growing season.

I got two jamaican red habenero plants that are about the same height, the strain seems to get pretty tall. So i decided as a test to top one of them so i can compare the two and see which way i prefer.
Before:

After:

ill be sure to let you guys know which method i like better.
Also really enjoying this strain! Beatiful plants they are more short with big leaves called peruvian white lighting

Having a little trouble with one strain called lemon drop, it seems to want to grow like a vine... cant get it to stand up straight very well unless directly under cfls, if i put them in natural light they go crazy and lean to one side.

oh any yesterday i took one of my medium sized jamaican hot chocolates outside for like a minute to pick an aphid off of it and a gust of wind completely ripped it off of its roots! it was terrible... All i could do is take the bottom few leaves off, dip the whole stem in rooting hormone and plant and put in humidity done and cfl. I really doubt it will survive though
But it survived the night so who knows.

I'll be growing some peppers myself with an aquaponics setup eventually. I have to run a few cycles of some other plants first and ultimately will end up growing a few kinds of peppers!

I love fatalis! I only grew one plant last year and it died shortly after giving me like one single pepper. If you ever want to trade some seeds for fatali seeds let me know. I have a pretty decent stock pile depending what you're looking for.
Anyway, the hottest pepper I have actually producing pods by far is the Naga morich. Very very similiar to the bhut jolokia (ghost pepper). It's a little too hot to use comfortably. I like the heat level of habanero's personally.

Hey guys, let's keep this thread going! I'm a huge chili fan myself, and am in the process of growing too many to list from memory lol. Unfortunately, my climate isn't the preferred for the tropical chili plant but I've definitely got some on the way.
Ok I'll try to name everything I've got growing, and post pictures soon. Ghost peppers (normal and white) Carolina Reaper Scotch Bonnett Bird's Eye Devil's Penis Peter Pepper Jumbo Jalapeno Orangesicle sweet pepper plus a bunch of random mix peppers (jalapenos, thai, cayenne, and others that I just mixed up the seeds and spread throughout a garden box)
Let's spark some interest here: What is your all time favorite chili to grow and eat? I'm talking about ease of germination, growing, looks and taste all in one.
I can't answer just yet because I'm still a newcomer to the world of serious chili but as far as eating goes, I had some amazing Peri Peri chili sauce at a european breakfast house that I later learned to be Bird's Eye chili based. That was in my top three chili sauces ever. As far as looks go, I'm torn between the Peter Peppers and the White Ghost Peppers I have growing, although at this point I don't even have flowers let alone peppers so I'm just going off of pictures of what I hope they'll be. Ease of germination? Well of course it depends on where you're at and how much money/effort you want to expend. Assuming you just are trying to do it cheaply in a relatively cold environment like me, the super hot varieties seem to be the hardest to germinate and grow in the unsheltered outdoors. That would include the ghost and carolina reapers. Most of the others are thriving .

ill tell you which one, the LEMON DROP
it grows into a very bushy plant with millions of peppers, looks nice and has got an amazing flavor. it is rather mild in comparison to habaneros or the others but this also sits well with my mrs also being a baccatum, it grows rater fast an produces plentiful

That looks good! I like fast growing peppers that put out a lot of fruits and taste good (lol yes I know... who wouldn't?). Where I live, the outdoor growing season for peppers is fairly short, we get about 3.5 months of guaranteed no frost. I'm kind of struggling with my super hots because they are growing so slowly I don't know if I'll get to harvest many fruits before frost starts.
It's a little too late in the year for me to start growing Lemon Drops but I'm going to put them on my list for next year's crop. Thanks for the suggestion .

I still have a lot to learn that's for sure. I just picked varieties that were available at the local stores, and ordered some from ebay that interested me due to their rarity, super hotness or appearance. I wasn't really properly taking into account the cold nights we tend to have or the small window of growing time. All that being said though, it sure is fun and I can't wait to see what I get out of what I planted.
I will have to do some research on baccatums and anuums. Always gotta learn how to do it better next year.

How big were they when they died? What do you think killed them? I've found chili peppers to be pretty easy to grow, they just grow a little slower than other plants.

Heres my two of my smallest peppers. Only these and one other runt left inside at this point, im constantly battling the wind and i dont think these ones would take well yet.
one of them has got a neat bonsai thing goin on though i might just keep it as a house plant

They are scorpion pepper.
My red habeneros are taking so long to turn red... Its just been full sized and green for what feels like weeks now.

they were about the size of a powerade bottle 32oz when suddenly they took a shit.
i think i gave them to many nutrients in the hydro chamber and over did it.. should have just taken it slow.
i am also using nutrients called flora grow? (if thats correct off the top of my head) but as research on hydro peppers, there is better out there.
but lets see if the pruning does anything, i have changed the nutrient to more of a flush stage so we shall see.. but im pretty sure they are just about toast.

These look gorgeous. I don't know where you are exactly but if you're in Oregon (lucky guess) then they should florish outside in a bigger pot with more dirt. You'd have to harden them off gradually over a couple days but I've found that even when I rushed them they still turn out good.

yes hardening them off is very important, you need to get them used to real UV light slowly so they can integrate "protection" into their cell walls im sitting in a lush green garden by now (well green balcony but its so stuffed full of plants it may asswell pass as a garden haha)

do they just fall off? if so they are not being pollinated and have blossom drop which could be caused by a couple things. about half of my peppers and all of my tomatos have blossom drop right now because of high winds, but as long as i keep them healthy i can hope to see them polinate and fruit when conditions improve.

since yours is hydro, ive heard using too heavy of doses of fertilizers with high nitrogen can cause blossom drop. maybe try cutting back on the nutes and see if it improves. also have you switching from a vegitative fert to one for flowering/ buds?

i have changed to the flowering nutes. its about time i change the water any ways so, i will give the cut a try.
as for the pollination i have forgotten to shake them to simulate the pollination.

so because of my shady ass balcony the plants grow and ripe at a snails pace, well, that was to be expected i guess...
anyway, weather is supposed to be nice the next weeks and i will be on holiday for two weeks, so when i come back i HOPE i will find a lot of ripe peppers so i can update the thread with some pics
i have to convince my gf to let me run the artificial lights longer next season as the peppers i grew indoor BLEW the ones from the balcony away, in size, heat and health !

My Vietnamese hot peppers, they're about full size. None have turned red, but there are tons of them. I'm not sure why those pictures ended up sideways, but I don't know how to fix it, they're off my phone.

i am going to have to take off all the new branches and shoots of my plants as autum is already around the corner and i want them to ripen off all the stuff thats hanging on them !
i have to tell you guys, ever since moving my new location sucks so much in comparison to where i was before, the balcony gets like 1/5th of the sun of the old one, its way cooler and it rains all the time - for fucks sake !

because of a shit summer with lots of far to cold weather and little sun on my balcony, this is what i find myself doing these days ...
removing flowers, to-be-flowers and little chilis in a vain attempt to have the plans focus all their energy into ripening of the chilis which are on them right now instead...
man, we are averaging 10°C at night already here, i really hope i get them to ripen, i have TONS of green chilis hanging

Damn guys. Loving the pepper grows here.
It'd growing season part 2 where I live so my peppers are starting to put off again. Summer was quite hot and rough for them. Lost a couple plants. But it's ok cause I planted several more.
I made a video on my garden a week or so ago and plan to update often. Checkity if ya want Entheogen & Hot Ass Pepper Garden:

I'd be down but I'm not sure how expensive it is to send mail to europe from the USA, plus I can't guarantee the purity of the genetics of my seeds since I have about 15 different pepper plants growing in close proximity so they're probably all hybrid seeds lol.

They're like a Thai chili, but from Vietnam. I can't find seed or a name for them anywhere on the net. My grandma brought the seed from Vietnam. They're delicious!

Mine are all starting on new rounds of blooms, and peppers, and it looks like they will be loaded down more so this time around than the first!
