Gotta be Marlin for me; Blue Marlin especially and Striped Marlin the least. But hell, any billfish will do!! I use skirted lures mostly for Blue Marlin as they bite clean and usually get hooked instantly, will use live baits for the small Black Marlin that are in plague numbers right now. I usually skip bait or switch bait for Striped Marlin as they are really messy eaters.
My one tip that I advocate everywhere I can is to use circle hooks if you use bait. Circle hooks only hook up in the corner of the jaw, this means no risk of internal organ injury and smaller under-sized fish can be released unharmed. The bonus of using them is that any fish you do hook also tends to STAY hooked. They were pioneered by the longline industry, they needed a hook that stayed in the fish and kept them alive as long as possible (dead fish on the line = less quality, less $$). The recreational industry caught on much later with the circle hooks, but they really have been a blessing. I've only ever pulled one circle hook from a hooked fish in the last 10 years, I couldn't tell you how many times I pulled conventional J hooks on fish.

They look a bit goofy, but they work a treat. You don't strike at the fish, you just let them swim away, load up the rod and pull line off the reel. Instant jaw hook up

I think carp are my favorite when it comes to battle. Trout are my overall favorite.

Man you wanna catch monster catfish use the biggest circle hooks you can find Snelled to 50 to 100 lb mono leaders. I use suckers and shad that are 6 to i5 inches long as live bait You may only catch 1 fish a night but it will be a hawg. Where I fish for them the flatheads only get to about 40 lbs but I have caught many in this size range. And every once in a while you can pick up walley in the 10 to 15 lb range. But cats are all I use bait for. For everything else I use primarily streamer flies of varying sizes, from 2 inches all the way up to 10 inches.

Didn't think that leader that heavy would be necessary for circles on catfish? I only use 100-150lb when targetting Striped Marlin and Black Marlin up to 300lb with live baits on circle hooks. Because the hook goes into the jaw corner, there is very little wear on the leader (unless this is more an underwater structure issue). You're best using as light leader as possible if tying the hook directly to the leader as the suppleness of lighter leader helps the hook work better.
Funnily enough, I have better success with 150lb leader than 100lb on Billfish. I think the reason is I usually tie 100lb leader directly to the hook, whilst I crimp 150lb. The circle hook has better movement on a crimped loop and finds the corner better.

Yea I could see why you would think that but with 10/0 circles it is tough to tie up a 15 or 20 lb leader to the hook not to mention my running line is like 15lbs but flatties will run for the nearest brushpile It acts as a shock against abrasion more than any thing. Sure a 50 lb leader seems like overkill but running straight i5 you can't lean on the fish to force him outta the brush pile That extra 3 feet give you some cushion , Kinda like a marlin or shark hitting your running line whith its tail.

I like catfishing.. For bait I usually use chicken livers or night crawlers. I get a county of residence license usually which allows you to use live and natural baits just no lures or minnows and only costs 9 dollars for the year!!
P.s. I wanna start striper fishing but it requires heavy gear and best results come from using 12 inch trout for bait but they avg 20 - 50lb

Man stripers are tough as hell but no reason you can't handle a 50 lber on 12 20 0r 30 lb tackle but that is cool as fuck most people do not know how tough stripers can be. Even schoolies will test you. Good luck. For schoolies try a freshwater trout rod with 6lb line. you'll have a blast. Go get em tiger.Chopper Blues are fun on light tackle too. a 10 to 20lb blue on 8 lb line with a standard bass rig will put up one hell of a fight and live to talk about it.

I don't typically have that problem with lighter leader, there's less drag through the water and the line doesn't end up alongside the fish's body typically.
Then again, I have never had a Marlin try take me into cover LOL.

Land based I'd have too say the humble Bream and the Dusky Flathead. Both are relatively easy to catch and put up a good fight, pond for pound.Tailor would have to be my 3rd favorite.
Bream

Flathead

It's almost impossible in Oregon now to find non mercury contaminated cats. We have ruined so much water it's not funny. There is still some good trout water but that's about it for clean fish. Fuck!
I'm glad I got in on the good days about 40 years ago. That was back in Michigan when I was a kid about the age of most of you guys.

Not in any particular order, but, steelhead, catfish, lake perch, and bluegill.
I just got a little 12ft aluminum flat bottom boat with a 6hp Evinrude and a fish/depth finder, its not a sweet boat, but its enough to get me on the water, I can't wait for spring to be here, going to be hitting the river and doing a lot of fishing hopefully.

hey - if it gets you out there then it will do the job!! I've just sold my 15 foot open runabout and am currently fully rebuilding and refitting a 16 foot half cab. The boat is going to look brand new again once it's done. The plan is to try and get a marlin out of it eventually. Nothing huge, but it will get the job done hopefully!!

Yeah I expect its going to be some good times on the boat. It was in rough shape when I got it, really dirty, it just sat unused for probably 15 years. I got some aluminum cleaner and cleaned it up good and re-painted the watercraft numbers, it almost looks like new again now. I put some new osb board where the motor mounts on the back too.I'm thinking about putting some of that outdoor carpet all on the bottom of the inside of the boat or maybe some of that spray in bedliner coating to reduce wear n tear. I figure worst case, if I'm not catching any fish, I can always just motor up and down the river and have fun with the boat too. It's fun just being out on the water anyways.

that's what I have done with my last boat and more extensively with my the boat I'm currently rebuilding. New boats here in Australia are just too expensive for me so I buy older boats and breathe new life into them. My father did the same thing with his 22 foot trailerboat. He saved a lot of money doing it and has been smashing other boats in competition. Goes to show you don't need the biggest or most expensive boat out there to catch fish!

Those monster Murrays are as rare as rocking horse shit nowadays. Never caught one myself, but then again freshwater fishing has never really been my thing.
Be careful up in QLD, so many laws and closed seasons make it easy to get in trouble. Your best bet is to get offshore. I'm gunna be up on the reef in october chasing giant black marlin, hopefully I can get one over the 1000lb mark!!

Thanks mate!! I tagged a Blue around the 250-300kg mark on 15kg ten years ago (approx. 600lb fish on 30lb tackle for you yanks). That's my biggest tagged billfish to this day. So a 1000lb+ Black would be the pinnacle for me.
What size boat are you wanting to fish the peninsula? And fiberglass or tinny?

Yellow mountain trout for sure.. best fish I have ever tasted! But you fish for a day (sunup to sundown), and get one or two if you are lucky... the water they live in, we drink straight from the river... it is more clean than most tapwaters and no nasty chems.. I notice the difference in my mind when traweling up there.. so peaceful and my mind is not so cloudy.. man I need to go there soon.. hVent been around since august...
-------------------- And thus begins the reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

Fair enough mate!! But FYI, the one my father is rebuilding won't be completely fitted out though. He just fixes up areas of structural damage, puts on a working motor and puts it on a trailer. You'd still need to do the fitout on the boat as well as any cosmetic changes. It's just a trailer, motor and a structurally sound hull package

Hmm this is tough for me, I would say crappie with my biggest being a 15.5 inch caught last spring on a plain jig under a slip float, I also enjoy fishing for lake trout got my first one last spring weighing in at 17 lbs and I have never felt a fight like that, I was tossing spoons in the early morning for them, smallmouth bass would follow after that.

Trout is my favorite for sure because it's my specialty. I catch some beasts at times too.
Bass would be second cause they never get boring to catch and usually bite all day.
Then Salmon is my third because I can hook them all day but I lose about 60% of them. I'm a noobie at river fishing

I think fishing is most fun when you are undermatched to your fish. That's why I love ultralight trout fishing in streams and even lakes. You can hook monsters but unless you got great skills you lose most of them. I used to fish a lake with huge trout but very wary due to extremely clear water. I'd fish with 4lb or less. I'd hook two to four in an outing but was very happy if I could land one. Those battles were epic and thrilling. I was often left with shaking hands and wobbly knees and slack line. But man when you land a 7 or 8 lb brown or rainbow you are through the roof.

Icelander, we enjoy the same thing. Catching a 200lb Striped Marlin on 16lb line is something we try sometimes. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does jeopardize the fish's health, but a good crew can have that fish tagged and released in good shape with the fight sometimes being over in a matter of only minutes

OMG. But it's true that a long fight is hard on a fish. Most of my fishing for those brutes was done in the coldest weather which is helpful to the fish. But anyways I usually ate them.

For me its always been trout. Though, where I am I haven't really had much opportunity to fish for anything else. I have world class trout quality water within driving distance so its definitely my first option if I'm going to go on a fishing trip. The average is 17 inches and 2 to 4 lbs but I've caught up to 25 inchers. There is both rainbows and browns and it is pretty common to have a 20 fish day. Oh and there something thrilling about catching a 25 inch fish on a size 24 fly. Also gotta love fishing the mayfly hatches and watching a fish come up to take your fly. Geeze its been too long I need to get out on the water!

You guys should check out the trout fishing in New Zealand, some of the farms in NZ have fish up to 20lb. And yes, the wild fish get just as big. On this side of the pond, Tasmania has trout up to 10lb, sometimes bigger

Rub it in.

Not NZ But we got some nice ones too
not my picture either, Lake Ontario New Yorks record brown is at 33 pounds and Lake trout is at 41 and Rainbows at 31. All caught from Lake Ontario.

I'd love to go fish Argentina and Chile then hope a plane to New Zealand. The waters are beautiful and the trout are large with wonderful landscapes for sure. Always read articles and drooled over the places

Icelander said: It's almost impossible in Oregon now to find non mercury contaminated cats. We have ruined so much water it's not funny. There is still some good trout water but that's about it for clean fish. Fuck!
I'm glad I got in on the good days about 40 years ago. That was back in Michigan when I was a kid about the age of most of you guys.
In Wisconsin the booklet you get with the fishing license says that all walleyes in Wisconsin have mercury. There a strict restrictions on consumption for children and women of childbearing ages.
We eat the small to medium walleyes and release the cats because they are usually big and old.
Wisconsin got all the mercury contamination from logging the river systems for decades. I'm guessing the same thing happened in Oregon.

Right now I am a huge fan of monkey faced eel, cause they are always there when you want to catch them, and they taste really delicious... takes next to no gear and falls into ocean foraging, which I am becoming a huge fan of.
