I've taken a liking to gin and (club) soda and vodka sodas. Not nearly as tart as tonic, and a little more heat/burn, but I think I taste the spices in the gin more. Whatever it is, I like it, and that's what counts :tongue2: Tequila and tonic or tequila and soda is another one you might now like.

I drink most bourbon, rye, and scotch neat, but sometimes I like it with ice and/or club soda too.

As for actual cocktails, mostly old-fashioneds- Bourbon, ice, bitters, a sugar cube, and a cherry and/or orange slice. Lemon and lime slices aren't bad either. Sub in brandy for the bourbon, and you've got a classic Wisconsin cocktail (brandy old fashioned) I like them too. And sometimes a manhattan, which is just subbing rye for the bourbon, and sweet vermouth for the sugar cube

Brandy and I guess Cognac are the only two liquors I've never really given a chance. Scotchs, Bourbons, and whiskeys I'll drink on the rocks, the only booze I like by itself. But I really dig the piney taste of gin it's pretty refreshing. And it feels especially suitable for this cold weather.

I'll have to try out that combo you mentioned.

Have you ever tried a rye? :yesnod: It might remind you of canadian whiskey (which are both corn+rye) like crown, but with a LOT more flavor :drooling: Spicy and more citrusy than the caramel and vanilla flavors of bourbon

All ~$20

I love the piney flavors of gin. If you like the fruity pebbles taste of purple weed, you might want to try out this stuff-

I love Rye and I also love really dry harsh weed.  Is that a coincidence?

I like a sweet bourbon for drinking, but if I am looking to enjoy whiskey I go rye.

Bulleit Rye is fucking amazing.

But yeah I definitely enjoy gins as well. Gin and grapefruit juice is really good as well.

Can't say I've had anything like that. Mostly when I drink a whiskey, it's either I invest in something good (90% of the time Makers Mark) or something cheap.

The stuff I'm drinking now is Bombay Dry Gin, was given to me as a christmas gift. I've switched from the gin&tonic to just the gin on the rocks. Tastes amazing! I think I've found a new favorite spirit to be honest.

I don't think it's as much a coincidence as much as it is you just having good taste  If I'm at an average bar, I'll usually just pound a few J&B scotch & waters (club soda) and hopefully have a nice beer on the side. Even the shitty dive bars around here now have a local pale ale (Schlafly) and most carry at least one IPA (my go-to style for the most part)

Bulleit Rye and Bourbon are my favorite too   Really, I can't imagine better whiskey.. but I'll keep going to tastings to try them anyways :tongue2:

@schwarg
All of those ARE really good IMO (and many others), just very reasonably priced. If you want "top shelf", I'd say reach for Bulleit or Buffalo Trace.
And if you like gin on the rocks, 99% guaranteed you like gin & club soda  Pretty much just makes your drink last longer, while not tasting like it's watered down due to the carbonation.

Well I've always got some kind of mixer on hand, and I usually get Tonic Water because I've been drinking a lot of vodka tonics lately. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a good vodka(ketel one), but I can only tolerate the rubbing alcohol taste for so long. I'll pick up some club next time I go to the market and try that out.

My favorite craft of beer also happens to be an IPA, being very piney & hoppy, so I wonder if that's a coincidence.

I used to love IPAs but then I got really sick of them.. Companies started just making the hoppiest beers they could and it got boring. That said, I'm a bourbon guy not really beer anyway.

I honestly can't stand the taste of most alcoholic drinks. I enjoy higher quality beers on the occasion and some wine is alright, but pretty much all liquors and spirits disgust me.

But, Gin and Tonic is amazing, its pretty much the only drink I'll ever order at a bar other than a beer. For some reason the way the gin mixes with the bitter taste of the tonic is just very pleasing to me, its almost a perfectly neutral flavor in my opinion. Good stuff indeed

Yeah I never liked IPAs.  They taste ok but give me bad hiccups on opiates where lagers and darker ales don't for some reason.

It's all about the different types of hops IMO :drooling: I'm a huge fan of the pinier ones like Chinook (Sierra Nevada Celebration) but I'll grab a fruity-pebble (IMO) tasting Centennial hopped brew like Bells Two Hearted every now and then. Also a huge fan of Citra and Cascade, as Sierra Nevada Torpedo is definitely my most purchased beer. Lemon piney, almost kushy :drooling: A new (2013) hop "Mosaic" tastes like papaya and blueberries; crazy sweet. And the Australian hop "Galaxy" tastes like fresh oranges.

Another thing IMO is that a lot of doubles/imperials are easier drinking than some "singles" (like Sierra Nevada) just due to the sweetness of adding more malt (and more ABV). I say this as I drink a very sweet (IMO) imperial "Rampant" by New Belgium, so obviously I like them now and then  More in the winter really. My favorite imperials like Sierra Nevada Hoptimum, Green Flash Palate Wrecker, and Founders Double Trouble are basically "green" tasting barleywines. Also a huge fan of American barleywines, go figure

I'm a HUGE fan of scotch ales/wee-heavys too. Stouts are nice now and then, but the chocolate and coffee flavors overpower the deep malty flavors that I'm after, and that are found in scotch ales :drooling:

I'd also wager that my "perfect beer" will be a hoppy red, as my favorite beers (SN Celebration, Founders Red's Rye) have a much more substantial malt than many "paper-thin" IPAs that pour looking like a lager

Okay, sorry for the  rant , wrong forum

Sierra makes some damn good beers, I had the 'Fritz and Ken's Anniversary Stout' aging for about 2 years before me and my buddy popped the cork over a bowl of some Sour D. Good times, good times. Their pale ale is pretty much my budweiser. Can't think of a time when I'm wanting a drink where that beer doesn't cross my mind. Always wanted to do the tour of their brewery along with the Stone brewery tour.

That aside, beer is a whole 'nother animal.

Add a dash of schnapps or flavored vodka to a gin and tonic if you need to make a strong drink for a girl  "It tastes like ____ flavored sprite!"

As for Sierra Nevada, agreed and well said  I've been to Stone though!

:yesnod: :drooling:

Lucky for me, it seems like hoppy reds are really starting to catch on. Red's Rye next year will be "Red's Rye IPA", Sierra Nevada replaced their fall seasonal Tumbler with "Flipside Red IPA", and O'Dell just released "Runoff Red IPA"

White (wheat) IPAs are another newly popular thing, super easy drinking and lets the candy/fruity flavors of the hops shine. New Belgium's new winter beer "Accumulation" and Deschutes "Chain-Breaker" for example.

This beer comes out once a year in the midwest (I think). Comes out around march and it's 15 for a 6 pack but it's one of my favorite beers ever, and I am not even a huge fan of hoppy beer.

Imagine an IPAs older brother and it clocks in at %10

I used to work a liquor store and this shit gets a straight craze. One guy came in and dropped 1.5 grand on almost all of our stock.

Sounds like he got a few cases  Hopslam's the pinnacle of the "easy-drinking, strong, imperial IPA". It's the only popular one brewed with honey too, but a somewhat-comparable idea is Lagunitas Brown Shugga brewed with brown sugar (10% and goes down as easy as their 6% IPA)

It ships out to MI Monday, IL/MO/OH/KY/WI on the 13th, and to the rest of their distro on the 20th :dizope: Available now at the brewery

Yeah it's weird. Gin by itself tastes bad to me, and so does tonic water, but combine the two, and it's the most delightful beverage. What alchemical wizardry is this shit?

Tanqeray and tonic with a lime= BEST COCKTAIL EVER

Tanq Rangpur is distilled with ranqpur limes, which have the same flavor (terpene) as purple weed :dizope: :drooling: That fruity pebbles taste.

Tart of tonic+heat of booze= delicious :drooling: Club soda is great too if you want the flavor of a drink on the rocks that IMO almost tastes like straight liquor on the rocks. IME Making it last longer=drink slower= little safer for me, or especially anyone driving. Gin and tonics are easy to pound.

Disclaimer- I drink most everything with club soda these days, but occasionally still a gin and tonic. I also only drink ~200mL of liquor a week, and almost all neat bourbon/rye/scotch. Gin is a little rarer. Usually only 100mL on a couple ice cubes with ~50mL of scotch

Damn, I love lagunitas. I thought they discontinued Brown Shugga.. I'll definitely be picking that one up.

This thread has got me craving beer and I devote my stomach to bourbon XD

Brown Sugar is :yesnod: Probably still on some shelfs! Is here at least
I think it was 2011? The replaced it with this incredibly easy-drinking 7.7% IPA called "Lagunitas Sucks (Brown Shugga Substitute)" and it was back again for 2012

Since you mentioned
+ Had this Founders Imperial Stout over the last ~1.5hrs (10.5% and goes down like ~7%)
and just cracked this
+
Just poured this maybe ~15min ago. Really sweet 8.5% IIPA, drinks as easy a sweet 6.2% Lagunitas IPA. Tastes dead on like a more brown-sugary (malt) tasting Hop Stoopid really IMO

Yeah it's weird. Gin by itself tastes bad to me, and so does tonic water, but combine the two, and it's the most delightful beverage. What alchemical wizardry is this shit?

not sure, but i remember reading tonic water use to have higher levels of quinine(now it has just enough for flavor, not medicinally significantly amounts) to fight against malaria, and they started cutting it with gin to make it taste better

after i reading that, i got an idea to make a joke trip report on erowid  for drugs ingested, gin 2oz and quinine unknown amount , but i never got around to it

 I've got a trip report from that combo that involved busting my head open on the floor of a convenience store.

It's wasn't by accident--them brits were some classy mofos back in the days of ol' fashioned colonial expansion--what better way to take a necessary medicine, than through a gin and tonic brought to you every afternoon by a little servant boy.
