So never use those hydro rocks again? I heard good things about them, I stayed away from perlite because of the glass getting into lungs thing.... What would ur reasoning for a larger chamber be jw?
thanks for the wisdom!

I don't know what you heard but there is absolutely no glass in the lungs concern.
We suggest a larger chamber because that little one won't hold 5 inches of perlite. Yes, you need a whole 5 inches deep of perlite and the only way you're going to get that is a larger chamber.

Ooooooh I think you're citing this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11453674
Dude this was a study of people who work in factories processing perlite. Yes, if you work around volcanic glass-dust every fucking day without a filtered respirator mask thing you will have glass dust in your lungs after years but.....
1: we're talking about wet perlite. Dust doesn't really 'happen' when it's wet. It's just perlite mud.
2: You're exposure if any is going to be so little that it just doesn't compare.
3: you can dump your perlite into a strainer, then hold the strainer inside a garbage bag and shake it back and forth for a little bit. All the tiny pieces of perlite will fall into the garbage bag and after a minute or so the only stuff left will be the big rocks that won't be able to magically float into the air and down your lungs.

Yeah there hasn't been asbestos in verm since the 80s. I googled it once for this exact reason.
EDIT: The whole issue was with insulation that had vermiculite in it. http://www2.epa.gov/asbestos/protect-your-family-asbestos-contaminated-vermiculite-insulation

I am fearful that I may be having the same situation. I have some brf jars that I think I pulled a little early than anticipated. I'd say they were 85% colonized at the time, would that effect any of the growth of the myc especially if I have been exposeing them to a 12-12 light routine. It hasn't been like 5 weeks but it has been at least a week and stil no change. I mist and fan multiple times a day, they are 1/2 pint jars that I let sit for 2 weeks then pulled them out. I'll try to get some pictures in.

yeah pics help, but if it's not contaminated all you can do is make sure it's moist, give it adequate fae and mist when needed

Smell the cakes. Make sure they mushroomy or least don't smell odd or dirt-like. Then feel how heavy they are. If they've dried out a lot they'll feel light from the water loss.
Those rocks are not a replacement for pelite so it wouldn't surprise if the cakes had completely dried out after this long.

Why's your hope gone? Did you smell it? Made sure it wasn't just dried out?
If you think it might be your fruiting conditions keeping it from pinning as a cake put it back in the jar and see if it pins in there. Breaking it up would delay pinning even longer.

If it's dehydrated yes dunking it will help. Like I said a severely dehydrated cake feels very light. It'd feel kind of like holding a cup of dry vermiculite rather than holding a cup of water.
I know you probably don't know a hydrated cake should feel like so hopefully that analogy will help.

Did you make the SGFC with 1/4 holes every 2 inches on all 6 sides? I mist as I feel needed, I go by the view of the cakes. Some days are 3 times some 4 maybe 5, however I fan much more than I mist. My cakes seem to love this. Just follow the tek to a T and I mean a T, dont stray or half ass a single step and you should be alright. Good luck brother!
