Interesting. I never knew the U.S. had such a rich history of drug use
    #19368889 - 01/04/14 03:40 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

The use of drugs has been prevalent in the United States since the earliest settlement. Consumption of marijuana in the American colonies dates back to the founding of Jamestown, and by 1629 the drug had been introduced into the Puritan colonies of New England. By 1765 George Washington was cultivating marijuana at Mount Vernon, presumably to alleviate the agony of an aching tooth. During the nineteenth century, or what Edward M. Brecher has described as a "dope fiend’s paradise," opium could be purchased readily and cheaply. Two opium derivatives, morphine and heroin, were in common use by the latter half of the century and "were as freely accessible as aspirin is today."1

The distribution of these drugs was not by way of any syndicate or other form of illegal trafficking, but through perfectly legitimate and respectable sources. Physicians nonchalantly prescribed them for patients who did not have to make an office call. Drug stores sold opiates over the counter without a prescription. Grocery stores also stocked the drugs and sold them as casually as fresh produce or hardware items. It was possible also to mail order a dose of heroin or morphine.2 Neither the importation nor the manufacture of these drugs was restricted. Since these opiates were addictive and used so widely (one New England pharmacist in a town of 10,000 sold three hundred pounds of opium a year), America obviously had a drug problem.

The History of Drug Control Policies in the United States. John C. McWilliams
Handbook of Drug Control in the United States. James A. Inciardi (ed.) (1990), pg 29

I did know about this, but I always thought it was a fringe thing.

All those housewives in early 1900s were addicted to the snake oil elixars that were on the shelves of every grocery store. Then came Mr.Enslinger who created the prohibition of all drugs (alcohol) comparing opiates to cannibis saying they are both destroying our country, he was half right except now it seems cannibis is gonna save the economy, an opiates are still destroying lives with every pill perscribed. Our own goverment is killing thier own, a form of genocide of druggies you could say. Drugs will aways be here, and to think a mushroom started our affection with altered states. washington and nearly every other colonist that had some land grew hemp, not
marijuana, it's not different than the claims of Jefferson smoking the
'indian hemp' in his pipe on his veranda when in actuality Jefferson never
owned a pipe, he hated tobacco and smoking

Yeah the shakers and Quakers were religious extremists who practiced nonviolence and peddled drugs like opium and cannibis to fund their colonies (among other herbs)

I often wonder what the life of a junkie was in America way back then.

I remember reading that Washington indicated in his journal that he was separating the male cannabis plants from the female ones, which indicates that he was growing cannabis for its use as a drug.

Luckly I have the ability to live without opiates , I cant speak for anyone but myself. I lost friends and almost lost a close family member from abusing opiates so if I do break a leg and go to the hospital im sure I would use it to aleve the pain, but eberyday use for me at this point is absurd. The use of opiates has caused alot more problems then it has helped lately  in my opinion. It should be the last resort for pain not taken for recreation purposes. And I dont think the weed the hospital has is as good as mine,

I believe the constitution is made out of good ol' American grown hemp.  People didn't start smoking pot until the late 19th century.  Before that they ate it.

Drafted on hemp. Final draft was on lamb skin or something.

Hemps use is older than any bible printed, it made the sails that carried the ships to undiscover lands which had hemp seeds on them due to their everyday use in the textiles used to make life more enjoyable paper to write on, oil to burn, rope to tie up your wife to the bedposts, whoops that one slipped.  I LOVE CANNIBIS FOR MANY, MANY REASONS OTHER THAN JUST SMOKING.

the reason that cannabis has the males culled is so that it doesnt go to
seed, once the plant is pollinated it becomes close to worthless as a drug,
in hemp it's because the male plants grow larger with coarser stalks/fibers
so you cull the males before they become too large and this in turn allows
the females to produce more fiber with a second sowing in mid summer to
facilitate seed without harming fiber production
