Some questions about poppy growin'
    #19258734 - 12/11/13 04:42 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hello!

I plan to grow some poppies (I got a lot of papav. somniferum seeds),but I'm located in France, and I was reading some growing guides which explained that poppy seeds should be sowed on fall ; does it means that now,on december 11th, it would be too late? I really don't want to wait more than one year to be able to grow poppies :/

You can sow them now indoors. Most people sow seeds in spring, and still get flowers before the season ends. If you have a warm room with some natural light, you can sow them now, no problem.

You can get two harvests if you sow in early spring and then some more a couple of months later. I have done this in the UK multiple times, poppies can be flowering from around June to Sept in our climate zone.

March should be about right for the first lot. Takes around 60-90 days from seed to mature pod depending on weather etc.

seeds dont stay viable for long so if you have fresh ones sow them soon...  the older they get the fewer % will germinate

They can last a good couple of years if stored well. They will degrade obviously, but they are usually so numerous that it matters very little, most people aren't going to grow several thousand which is a couple of tiny packs.

Harvest 4-5 good sized dried pods and you will have 10,000's for the next year. I have KG's of seed, shopping bag-size ziplocs full of the damn things.

Sounds fine, watch out for the opiate binge though, can end badly, even with raw/cooked opium, you may find yourself craving something/anything when it runs out.

I assume everyone knows they are playing with fire whatever opiates they play with. The morphine content alone can lead to serious addiction issues, moderation man. Please. We all started thinking it would never be us shooting heroin and desperate for a time machine taking us back to before the time we "experimented". :peace:

they do best in sparse conditions with lots of sun - too cold or too hot will destroy the tiny seedlings so wait until after last frost

You have time in france to sow seeds early spring also..

If I have succeed spring sow with papaver somniferum at arctic circle, you should not have problems in france.

It's just a thing because p. somniferum are very cold tolerant when they are few days old and small. After germination they are very hardy plants and fall sow seedlings will dormant under snow or cold area, if they are not too big they tolerant lots of cold.

Some strains will grow wild at north europe and in nature basically there is fall and spring seedlings around wild plants.

Anyway, it just takes more time when you sow seeds as spring because they spent some time at someway half germination half seedlings stage when they are most frost resistant and grow slow, after they reach certain size they are not anymore resistant to cold and they starts to grow fast when p. somniferum have more foliage.

I've done spring sow to greenhouse somewhere at May and I got two pod harvest above arctic circle. So spring sow is effective also. I succeed also grow this plant outdoors but summer was so short they doesn't have time to get seeds ready.. Need to find some strain suitable to arctic circle outdoors.. :p

I grew some last year and harvested around June iirc. It doesn't get cold here until roughly October, so does that mean I can harvest in June, replant, and harvest again in September?

Ok,so my plan is to sow poppy seeds on early spring as you mentioned above; I'm wondering if I could germinate the seeds watering carefully and waiting for the seedlings to grow, and, after that, let the plant grow without watering....

I looked some websites where it was said that poppies was fairly drought-resistant . I just want to let them grow themselves in a field , where I live there is a lot of "papaver rhoeas" (corn poppy, field poppy, red poppy ,coquelicot,I don't know which name is used in english ^^ ) which is abundant in spring/summer, that's why I'm wondering if his brother could be given up without watering and still grow until harvest!

Yeah, I would just not water them at all unless you're in a serious drought.

Yeah, ime overwatering leading to root rot is a bigger concern than underwatering which is also why it helps to have well draining/loose soil.
