Can dogs connect to the Blues?
    #19368187 - 01/04/14 01:12 PM (10 years, 27 days ago)

Just to explain why I've brought this up:

I came home earlier today and was in a real mood to listen to the blues so I turn on my computer and play this very bluesy song through the speakers (the song can be found at the bottom of the post). My dog at the time was sitting about 5 or 6 metres away from the speakers and as a harmonica solo starts to play my dog gets up and starts to position himself to begin howling. At the sight of this I begin to really laugh my ass off and he stops trying to howl because of my laughter.

So my question is has anyone else noticed their dog howl to the blues? Like I would have have thought that all dogs interpret all forms of music as noise and the whole idea of dogs howling to the blues only happened in movies but I guess some dogs really do have a soft spot for the blues

Here's the song that I was playing for anyone interested:

Do not make the mistake of generalizing dogs as a species.. they are as diverse as us. And yes.. some might. Some might not.

I don't know about that. They can process the sounds better than you can though, assuming your speakers are better than your ears, which sometime they are. The sound was probably aggravating him so he felt the need to dominate it.

I'm certain they can hear better than us but but before today I didn't know if they can understand what they can hear as being music. Although like you said maybe harmonicas just really aggravates them and that's why they howl

I thought that too, maybe they hate it so much that they howl to show their suffering

 watched both of them, that's awesome. Really thinking of getting a harmonica now, I had considered getting a couple of harmonicas before, each in different keys so I can play along with a harmonica while I also play guitar (a bit like what Bob Dylan was famous for doing), now I really want to do this .

Well it should be said that some dogs are more human than dog & vice versa. I know I had a dog, but one day it got away. I used to take it everywhere with me, would bring it to my soccer games & beer parties etc. One day we had two dogs enter in the room at the same time & I had to put them each into separate rooms for they would bark at one another. I had to put the dog down because it would walk into mud then leave trails of it on my expensive Egyptian carpet I purchased three years ago before  I went to watch a live surfing match.

Anyways to answer your original question, yes I do believe dogs are prone to barking atleast 3 times more when playing blues music opposed to country. I recall I brought a dog to a blues concert & the dog ran on the stage & was sniffing the lead singers socks & it was really a queer scene. The security guards had t ocome on & place the dog inside a cage so its barks wouldn't be heard any longer, & then they put a muzzle over its mouth for good measure.
