first microscope!!!!!!!!!
    #19367679 - 01/04/14 11:28 AM (10 years, 27 days ago)

Hey everyone!! So my first microscope finally came today!!!!!! But I have a couple questions that the manual didn't answer....the box says "40x-640x Magnification" will this be good enough for now? I'm not quite sure what that means exactly. And also, could someone point me in the direction of a good myco microscope site please? I have some Gymns and Amanita I would love to look at! Thanks for any advice!!!!

Also, reading this book will help even if its old.

Cool. As for the microscope's hardware, what objectives came with it?

Maybe you could post some pics of it?

Sorry...I've already packed it back up to send back. But it came with some cool stuff...specimen slicer, plastic tweezers, magnifying glass, and a few other things. I'm going to call the schools in my area Monday and see if I can't scrounge up a real scope. I had my hopes up so much for this... ill get it though.

Ask Alan, he always seems to know which ones are good buys currently.  Do you have a link where you got your scope so we can see what it is better?

Comon Byrain, its his first scope, I dont think he will be doing crazy microscopy to start. I got my first scope it went 600x. it worked well for general features and looking at spores. Then i got an 800x and i liked it, then i descided i wanted more and got the 200-2000x Omax that I use today. I want another, like a zeiss or something, someday in teh far future..
I recommend you Get a cheap scope, if you like it get a good one in time.

Im with you Byrain, you know i am. :super:.

Op should get a really nice expensive scope so he has to use it

Art2312, take 5 minutes or a bit more and read the part in this link titled "Purchasing An Introductory Microscope".

I strongly believe that if you're going to make a purchase, you should have a camera/imager to share your photos.

Thank you guys for all your help! I guess I was too excited and didn't do my research first... live and learn! I like Joust's idea... maybe ill stop :bigblunt: for a couple months and just use that money to get a really nice one that can't just sit around
Joust, you said you started with a 600X, mine says "40X-640X" does that mean it magnifies between 40 times and 640 times? I tried looking at some Gymn spores but all I could see was a dark spot where the spores were...I didn't put a drop of water on it either tho...

I'm still on my first scope, the important part is how you section the material not what scope you use.  Though it was nice having a scope with kohler illumination and 1000x ootb to grow into, I paid ~$300 from an ebay seller.  I didn't really know what I was looking for so I just went with something Alan recommended to someone else...

So I should probably shoot for a 1,000X then, it sounds like... I'm moving to SC in March and the lady that is head of the Mycology society is a Mycologist at Clemson...maybe she could hook me up with a good scope...

The magnification does not matter much, what matters is that your scope has a 100x oil immersion objective.  This separates toy scopes from useful ones.

Also you want binocular or trinocular, monocular scopes give a lot of people headaches.

Is the objective the eyepiece(s) or something different? They have a different one at toys r us that's 900x but I'm not sure what comes with it...

I recommend the Amscope B-100ms or equivalent Omax scope from ebay.

There is a microscopy forum here with some good, info, but not many people check it often...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/170

There is also a pretty good Fungal Microscopy group on Facebook.

I agree that it is super important to get some way to take good pictures through your scope.  The first year or 2 you won't have much of an idea what you are looking at, and it really helps the learning curve to be able to share your photos and have other people comment on them.

Ask around your local hospitals, they often update their equipment and sit the old ones in a dusty cupboard somewhere, I got my scope for free and made a donation to the hospital as thanks.

You want to talk to someone in their labs, they'll know what they have laying around, or if not have a look for you.

Wow! That looks like an amazing deal!! Thank you fry!! If I bought the 1,000X oil immersion objective, would that fit this model? Are most objectives universal? Or would I need to find a specific one to fit that model?

That 'scope comes with a 100x immersion oil objective, which when paired with the 10x eyepiece (also comes with the 'scope) you get 1,000x

It is a great deal, this is American right?

I recovered a very very old microscope that my uncle used when he was studying, but the maximum magnification is 300x.

I tried to see some P. papilionaceus spores on it today and it wasn't bad, I could only see their shape though.

I was also looking for one but I might have to try on European websites.

i was going to return it and pay the difference for a new one, but since they dont have what i need, ill just keep this one for my son when he gets older.
i busted out my Gymns and got some spores under the scope....i could see them, tiny, but i see them  ... this is the best i could do :frown:

i am without a doubt getting a real scope now!!!!

Not bad though for a kids microscope. Did you take the pics directly from the eyepiece?

Thru the eyepiece with my phone, yes. Definitely not bad for $25, especially with all the little stuff it come with....but I DEFINITELY want a "real" scope now, this will never be enough lol

Same thing here.
I definitely think I'm gonna get that book that Byrain mentions on the beggining of the thread, it looks like a good place to start.

No doubt. And also, that link from Lightning towards the bottom of the 1st page is super informative!

Lol, wish my wife felt the same. She's starting to hate mushrooms I think  that's the majority of what I tell her about  she's past the smile and nod stage and now just lets me ramble while she watches TV lol
