Its nitrogen. If its in a can its a nitro can or bottle, but on tap like guiness they use nitrogen. To simulate it when you open the can, the plastic ball(or a missile looking thing in bottles) cracks open and releases nitrogen. The nitrogen dissolves in the beer and displaces the CO2 and makes it less carbonated. Thats why the cans or bottles might over flow when you open it. Its just to make sure that the beer has the exact amount of carbonation when you open it no matter how longs its stored. Its still never as good as it is on tap though.

Boddington's has it as well...They help regulate your pour, resulting in a nice head..to make it like it's from the tap.. I'm not sure about the nitrogen thing

I've never had a bottle of boddingtons but I've had it on tap in England. If the bottles of boddingtons are anything like guinness the second you open it you might overflow. Of coarse its carbonated, but why don't sodas overflow when you open it(after its been undisturbed and sitting in a fridge for the last few days?
If you have anymore doubts, look at this link.
