steam pasteurizer
    #19364975 - 01/03/14 06:37 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

so im looking to build a steam pasteurizer. not like the bogus ones ive seen on here. im looking to build a scaled down version of the steam pasteurization rooms described in the mushroom cultivator by paul stamets.

in the section of the book titled compost preparations. it describes the room as having walls insulated to R19 protected by a vapor barrier. a ceiling insulated to R30 also protected by a vapor barrier. a centrifugal fan driven by belts and pulleys for intake and recirculation purposes. and either equipment necessary to produce steam or high output electric space heaters to raise the temp.

it seems like the reason people didnt have good success with their steam pasteurizers is that:
* they have no temperature control
* they have no method of air circulation, and substrate near the nozzles reaches higher than optimal temperatures [ie. sterilization range]. while air further away is at two low of temperatures and improper pasterization is achieved.
* not enough space between bags

what do you think of my diagram?
anyone know where i could get a water proof fan capable of operation at 150F? im thinking i might have to do belt and pully and have the motor isolated from the steam.

Check out RR's 50 gallon drum set up.

There's also another guy on here using
a freezer chest with automotive vacuum
lines fitted to his PC to pasteurize in bulk.

Unless your starting an edible farm I don't
see any need to go any bigger than those
guy's setups.

I don't know why would anyone need that many cubes

RRs drum set up is for sterillizing. you couldnt pasterurizing in it.
unless you have a fan blowing the steam around you gonna have hot and cold spots.

i was thinking about this while i was driving around and i think im going to build my own water proof fan assembly out of aluminum. as there isnt any commercially available at a fair price, that i can find.

im not growing magic mushrooms.
larger pasterurizer = less loads and less work

i think i may have found a solution its called a bilge fan.
it a waterproof fan used to remove exhaust fumes from an engine compartment in a boat.
im assuming this will be able to take both the heat and moisture in a pasteruizer.

Wanna buy an old industrial fridge?

I think you will be actually better off with a used freezer shell for your use.

I don't see the need for the fan.

You will need a heat source, some piping, and steam.
A steam setup from an old cooker filled with water over a rocket stove will work.

Search the forums. There are great guides.

It doesn't have to be complicated.

I kinda assumed you wanted to grow edibles not psyches.  But I don't judge.

If you are growing non psyches I'd suggest a used industrial walk in freezer.  It would be a huge capital cost to move even if you found an old one for free where the refridgeration didn't work.  But it would be useful on a farm.

I know of a unit that doesn't work but it costs 1000$ and will be another 1 or 2k to move.

Might use it in a farm setting to produce trichoderma for mycorrizae some day.
