It seems like you're just bouncing from one part-time wage slave position to another, they're all gonna suck
Who knows though, this could be that thing you're good at...

Exactly this. Why the hell would you want to lower yourself by working in the restaurant industry? It is the WORSE industry to work for, and then retail being right above it.

I've made 20 an hour regularly. Sure it comes with it's bullshit, but it's completely worth it. We are people please-ers, like I said sink or swim.

I don't think I'm alone here but if it is a respectable restaurant then the product is somewhat of an art form. Definitely is where I work and that's where the personal gratification comes in. I'm not talking deep frying burgers for a line of hungry Americans right now.

Woopty doo!!!  You can also make 20+ an hour by going to trade school and getting certified in something. And you don't have to deal with all the bullshit stress. Seriously, I don't know how anyone can handle the kind of stress that the restaurant industry offers. Working in the food service and retail industry has made me seriously HATE people.

I sort of work in food. I'm a barista at a local coffee shop but we also do paninis etc. It's more work than any of the jobs I've had before (I'm 23) but worth it at the end of the day. Feel like you've accomplished something and have a fat wad of tip money in your pocket.

It looks really good to food industries if you have some food experience. What I recommend is working at a deli because that is the basic food experience. I worked at one for a year with no previous history and they ended up loving me. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature.

Keep us posted on your gallivant, here's to the best in the food world.

Thank you for your input Dankfish!! I have a little experience in a deli, worked some shifts for a friend while I was in the meat shop. I totally agree I could use some more experience in the field. Thanks again though brother! Will deff. keep the Forum posted!

I dont know honestly, ha I love interacting with people, i'm very generous/willing to help out in any given moment. I feel like I would be a good fit! Plus I love food so why not contribute to the life? Plus I want to at least have the ability to say I've experianced it, and as stated above by DebuteMachine, I will either sink or swim!
Thanks for you opinion though! Much appreciated!

Namaste

I've worked in the food service industry for a long time. Also worked in retail. They're both the most bull shit line of work anyone can do.

I've gone to junior college and have received my associate in art's degree for finishing general ed. That degree has got me nothing in this shit economy. I'm going to massage therapy school right now. After I get licensed, I will be able to charge 60+ for an hour massage. And all I have to do is massage, be RELAXED and NOT STRESSED the fuck out like a restaurant worker running around like a chicken with its head cut off, dealing with angry customers.

When a table walks in and they want to talk food, it's like the are saying "hey we like sex, can you talk sex with us?"

I get off on it.

:smilingpuppy:

Also the last year of my life I was the bartender at a small company (I left for reasons involving the owner is a fucking moron) and damn people would just come in, order, and chat, and tip me at the end! Think of it like this forum, I just got off on it so much.

Look you don't like it, I get it. Working 6 hours a day with people I enjoy and getting paid to see them is a fucking dream come true to me.

It's not always 20 an hour, but if you want to work it it can be. I'm a whore for that kind of stuff anyways. The smiles kill me.

I suppose we're in different boats tho, sorry bro.

I do NOT disagree with you one bit man, I have burned my bridges in the past, as well as made many others happy for the work ive done, and have good references. I've worked up to three jobs at once throughout a weeks time(part time obviously). But I'm just looking for my path is all. I can't afford to do what I really want (Audio Production) but I'm making the best out of it that I can. Thanks for your input

All I can say is this past year is the first year I've ever felt that success I really was striving for. It felt good, it felt fulfilling. It's just the guy who owned the restaurant (NOTE: I will never refer to him as my ex-boss. I was on a 1099) was such a turkish piece of shit. He will be out of business by next year.

It was heart breaking. Currently unemployed for the last 2 and a half weeks. That is the stress you're talking about, but I really am the type of person to live in it and love it.

I'm weird like that.

Ahhh... /:
sorry to hear that, hope you find something soon! I mean if anything embrace the time you have off and reflect! By the sounds of it though, sounds like you have plenty of good exp. in the field. I'm sure youll be back on the train soon  :likeaboss:

As for the turkish prick.. tsk tsk..thats that shit I dont like..lol but aye its part of the life experience right? I also strive for a stressful environment, because I hate standing around doing nothing. Thats why I couldnt stand doing sales anymore. Commission was great but just wasn't worth the boredom. haha thanks for standing up though!

If you guys want to work in a restaurant have at it, its your loss

I'd rather work in a warehouse, make more money for a lot less stress. That's a labor position even easier to obtain than restaurant work, with more job openings in the big city

If you're 50k in debt, why don't you finish school just to offset your loans some more? Have you applied for federal aid?

So your ex-boss was a "Turkish piece of shit"? :smirk:

If you can't "keep a lid on it" (it being your choice of words) on the internet, with as much time as you need to think before speaking, no doubt you got let go

Generally more than restaurant pay, depends where you go and what position. The lowest rung is often up to $12, thats the equivilant in some places as a dishwasher - only its easier work and easier to find and the dishwasher will be making min wage.
If you live in a big city its easy to find temp work (often leading to permanent if desired) and in my experience its always a better situation than restaurants. From your schedule, to the way supervisors interact with you, and down to your paycheck.

Labor positions aren't what I have in mind for a career, but they do fine for a day-job while everything else is put in line.
