Insight from my first 2 years of mushroom hunting

Hello. I love psilocybin mushrooms as do many. But the past 2 years I was hunting some nice gourmet and wild edible mushrooms. My first one I decided to take the plunge and eat was the coprinus variegatus (scaly ink cap) and It was pretty yummy. I mistaked it for a shaggy mane (it looked like the shaggy mane because it was young and the scales hadn't separated yet). It was a very yummy mushroom. a treat, reward, and a thrill.
Since then I have realized that you got to stick with the safe ones (duh).. And safe ones mean the ones that either don't have any poision look alikes or the ones you can positively identify. True it is always a risk until you know what your eating (the ultimate test being eating it, and surviving). But there are what they call beginner's mushrooms... ones that are easier than others, and less dangerous.
I had since eaten 3 others (and chewed on hikers gum - the turkey tail) making my list to 4 experienced wild mushrooms. One of them was iffy (the amanita muscaria). but I did it anyway. They always reccomend staying away from anything amanita just cus it's an amanita. The other two were the delightful shaggy mane (the real one this time) and the unexpected Ravenelli's bolete.
It is always risk when eating wild mushrooms but you take the risk with the reward and keep it as safe as you can. It can be quite adventours but not reccomended for anyone but a true enthusiast. As your safety is never guranteed.
Since then I have familiarized myself with many others. The grisette (amanita vaganita), The Naucina (lepiota naucina), The gem studded puffball, other puffballs (the gem studded was the easiest), the beloved chicken of the woods. I can easily identify if it is a russula, bolete, milk mushroom, amanita (most amanitas).. but usually cannot identify it further than it's general stature... I feel familairized enough to start eating the grisette, naucina, gem studded puffball, and the chicken of the woods... but none others at this point.
I usually try and identify atleast one mushroom a year that I'd like to find and study and/or eat. It is uaually one I had already somewhat familarized myself with previous years. This next year (2014 season).. I'd consider the four I just mentoiond previous.. but other than that It's just observing and/or taking pictures. It is a great facination but best to be safe...
Hope everyone who enjoys this sport has a good safe time doing it and looking forward to spring 2014.. Never found a morel either, but that too is a beginner mushroom and probably woudln't pass up the oppurtunity to eat one.. (just watch out for false morels).
Another tip - have EVERY guide book, even the less useful ones. cross reference data.. I even have one with mistakes in them but you can use your own scientific deductive analysis to make them as safe as you can determine, then weigh it out (the risk) and make an ultimate decision based on safety. And aside from ALL the guide books. use the internet, people's mushroom blogs, shroomery, and google images. and always keep in mind even the books can make mistakes so the internet definitely has mistakes too. Just make sure you use your detective sleuth skills to b smart. If not.. just eat the grocery market ones.

Nice post. Good luck this year my friend!
On a side note, while Morels may be a beginner mushroom to identify it is certainly not an easy one to find IMO. I've had quite a few years of disheartening spring seasons and only the past few years have I come out of the spring with full buckets. If you plan on taking on the mighty Morel be prepared for the madness that comes with it.

No its not, its never a risk when you eat properly identified mushrooms, it only becomes a risk when you eat unidentified mushrooms. Posting pictures here is a good way to ensure you are not eating something that could potentially be poisonous.

True, though I've started from nothing so It was always a little adventurous for me. But the ones I have eaten and the new ones I have gotten to know pretty well are pretty safe for me...
and also young raveneli's bolete were one of the most beautiful mushrooms I have ever seen.. They have a texture like a very fine small yellow marshmellow.. It is beautiful.. and the coprinus variegatus and adamentarius is also a very beautiful one to me
