exactly what i was worrying about. but how exactly would that risk contamination? unless it grew through the filter.

Is that also a concern with syringe filters?

The sfds are made from polypropylene as far as I know
and so are syringe filters. see: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/labware/labware-products.html?TablePage=20442122
How do the syringe filters not have the problem of wicking contams then? If you have a lc with a syringe filter and turn it upside down, will any water leak through?

a whatman will ensure no liquid touches your fuliters, check tl's guide out lc's don't require that much ge, just enough to ensure theres no vaccuum created

Ok I get it now. Suppose I make a lc jar without a gas exchange filter of any sort. How long do you suppose the mycelium will last? I actually want to do this because I want to use it all up fairly quickly (2 weeks) and not store it.

You don't need any for a LC, as long as you leave enough air in the jar, so only fill it for 2/3. I'm having LC that has been in the jar for 2 months which is still fine, so your two weeks won't matter. When you do still want syringe filters, I have some laying around I tried to use with jars, but replaced them with felt.
When using jars without syringe filters, when taking out LC there will be a negative pressure. So you need to inject a full syringe of air before you take one out. So a syringe filter in the jar lid can also be handy to not need that step. I make syringes filled with clean air in front of my flow-hood, but you could also wrap a syringe in foil and PC it I guess. You also might get yourself a few syringe filters and needles, which you PC connected to each other wrapped in foil to use to stabilize pressure in the jar to the outside.
