let me blow your mind
uniqueness is an illusion simultaneity is an illusion , space and time is not linear - depends on your velocity i.e. everything we see is illusion, nothing is real
but if your mind is already blown you would know this

Hooooooolllyyyyyyy fuck.

I've had most of these thoughts myself. That last part about the 1% was a fresh perspective. My mind was blown.

I agree, we already know that speed effects time. If we were traveling the speed of light, time would be non existent. If we can ever figure out how to travel that fast (which Einstein says is impossible) we could live forever.
Is it possible that in the bible, when people were living 500 years and shit, the planet was traveling at a faster velocity, and therefore they aged very slowly?

Time would still exist. We would just perceive it differently. Einstein is incorrect too. Its possible to travel faster then light. It was initially ruled out because our mass was the factor. Light has none. But the big bang moved faster then the speed of light. The singularity was of "infinite" mass. In parentheses because of course it wasn't infinite. Just a number so high we could never comprehend it. As for the bible. Well they say a lot of things in there.

do you have a paper as reference to the big bang expanding faster than the speed of light, with scientific proofs? never heard it yet, but I must admit big bang doesnt interest me
all other physics does, big bang has too many holes/singularities ;-)
big bang and quantum mechanics, not much in favor of those
no coincidences in my brain, those theories are for people who like coincidences in everything
big bang only explains 5% of the matter in the universe, the rest is unknown missing matter (dark matter and dark energy)
pretty interesting, but it still predicts well, they just dont know what the rest is, mostly guesswork at this time
FTL travel is not possible only in theory, but light speed seems to be the ultimate speed if you could travel faster than light you would need infinite energy to get there, and you would get infinitely heavy too
only massless particles can usually travel at light speed, but nothing has been observed faster than light
faster than light might just be a theoretical construct, it might have nothing to do with reality
what glues reality together? electromagnetism electromagnetic waves/photons that signal inside our bodies and everything move at the ultimate speed, the speed of light if you could go faster than that you could go faster than "the matrix" we live in ;-) I cant even comprehend how that should be possible, only that it would be possible to move at light speed if you had no mass
the idea of relativistic velocity addition is that velocities keep adding up, but only up to near the speed of light, 0.999999c i.e.
if I travelled faster than the speed of light, the electromagnetic clock inside my body might not be functioning anymore it wouldnt be able to signal anymore, as the signal only moved with light speed
I would probably blow up ?;-) , not sure

Do you have a paper backing that big bang only explains 5% of matter.?Nver heard that one. But there have been numerous programs about it in the past few years since the "theory" part was dropped. Its still not proven for say because no one was there but overwhelming evidence supports it. Scientists and like minded geniuses across the global are constantly engaging themselves in experiments and such to try and shed light on it everyday.

Can anyone verify whether or not NDGT actually said this or not?

If so I basically lost 75% of respect for him. Cuz that is some arrogant, condescending, and self-assured- not to mention completely nonsensical- thing to say. It's like saying that circles taste good.

it is the same as saying 95% of the big bang theory hasnt been verified http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/media/121236/121226_NewPieCharts720.png http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bang#Dark_matter
we observe 95% dark energy/matter when we observe the universe, but we dont know what it is, or if it is really there, just that it should be there we might have an idea why it is there
we have no theory that explains 100% of the matter in the universe, big bang is far from complete it is still pretty successful though
dark energy/matter is behind the acceleration in the big bang AFAIK yet we dont know what it is also there are lots of black holes in the universe, but we dont know if they really exist
lots of holes still (there are 5000 black holes in the universe so far iirc that noone knows what really is - there keep getting more each decade), yet we seem to assume we have a theory of everything the beginning of the big bang was a singularity too, but that is just another assumption that seems to fit good
that is what I mean with a lot of holes, but I dont claim to know the big bang, maybe some of these problems have been solved just a quick writeout for anyone interested in TBBT , maybe they can give a better overview of some of this
I view big bang as a good model (verified model), not as a fact of nature like many do ;-)

Something had to create the matter in which triggered the big bang. Matter can not be created from nothing

yup that is the most basic law of physics, conservation of energy
yet the big bang theory violates this
it is a pretty good model though, they can run it from around 10**-xx?sec after the big bang and everything seems to fit iirc except all the missing antimatter/dark energy/dark matter

He basically said it response to Christians people saying they don't believe in evolution.

science is true if you believe in it or not, as the model has been verified
math is true if you believe in it or not too, as logic doesnt lie, always true when proven
I dont see it as condescending, now if he had said everyone who isnt an atheist is a bafoon it might be ;-)
scientists can be a little arrogant at times, it comes with the trade, but usually only when people try to dumb down their science to religion i.e. (try to explain science as religion)
personally I like both science and religion, and there is no reason to explain one in terms of the other, often completely opposite "belief systems" it is also worth noting that science does not exclude religion, you can be a scientist and be religious

No, he didn't say that facts are facts. That would be a tautology, and I would be very surprised to find a scientist expounding tautologous propositions. He said that science is true. There are multiple problems with his statement:
- Science is a method or a practice. A method or practice is not the kind of thing that can be true. The kind of thing that can be true is a proposition.
- Tyson has used a copulative verb rather than active verb. Copulative verbs are logical semantic definition operators. Since Tyson is a scientist, he should be using English prime, which necessitates active verbs. A reformulation of his statement which captures the semantic content I believe he intended in English Prime would be, "Useful application of the scientific method results in true conclusions, whether you think it does or not."
- The syntactic composition of the statement is likely to cause the intended audience to feel condescended to, which reduces its likelihood achieving its intended effect significantly

Felt it was relevant..
But more seriously, he's only human.. And this was on a talk show.. It's not like he wrote this down in a paper for a scientific journal or something.
