also don't even open up that first one to clean and reuse it. its not worth spreading mold spores to salvage a jar worth less than a dollar.

You can boil it for 5-10 minutes the spores are at the surface it will fry them then you can dump it in the trash indoors. No sense wasting a jar

That's what I'm saying.. No need to steam bathe it for 90 minutes?

Nope a few minutes is good. By the time it comes up to temperature and then cools down it's spent quite a lot of time at temperatures that easily kill mold spores.

i would wait a day or two more on that second one though. Give it a chance....don't throw it out till you know for sure. Contams grow way faster than cube mycelium, so if it's fully colonized in 4 days, you know it's no good

Well then I guess I'm just a little lazier/more wasteful than other people. Half the time I treat my jars like they are disposable. $10 for a dozen jars seems worth the work I save myself.

Heres WHY i said this.
Im going to hazard a guess and say you inoculated these both at the same time. The first has shown QUICK signs of contamination, and to further avoid depression and let-down, start work on another batch - that way if the others also let you down you have a backup plan.
Good Luck!
