    #19362750 - 01/03/14 10:31 AM (10 years, 27 days ago)

One of them looks 100% contam, and the other one is just beggining to show some colonizing.

:whathesaid: also don't even open up that first one to clean and reuse it. its not worth spreading mold spores to salvage a jar worth less than a dollar.

You can boil it for 5-10 minutes the spores are at the surface it will fry them then you can dump it in the trash indoors. No sense wasting a jar

That's what I'm saying.. No need to steam bathe it for 90 minutes?

Nope a few minutes is good. By the time it comes up to temperature and then cools down it's spent quite a lot of time at temperatures that easily kill mold spores.

You don't need to pressure cook mold.  Simply put the contaminated jars in a pot of water and bring it to a boil for a few minutes and then shut off the stove.  When the water cools enough to stick your hands in to retrieve the jars, dump them out and re-use.

i would wait a day or two more on that second one though.  Give it a chance....don't throw it out till you know for sure.  Contams grow way faster than cube mycelium, so if it's fully colonized in 4 days, you know it's no good

Well then I guess I'm just a little lazier/more wasteful than other people. Half the time I treat my jars like they are disposable. $10 for a dozen jars seems worth the work I save myself.

Heres WHY i said this.

Im going to hazard a guess and say you inoculated these both at the same time.
The first has shown QUICK signs of contamination, and to further avoid depression
and let-down, start work on another batch - that way if the others also let you
down you have a backup plan.

Good Luck!

Looking good man.  Put'em on a shelf with the uncolonized parts facing out so you can see the growth without moving them around too much.

neglect tek, means dont touch or move your jars anymore.  they are fine as is any excessive handling leads to settling of the substrate and it gets compacted into the bottom of your jars and can have a tough time colonizing.
