Maryland legislators will soon tackle the thorny issue of legalizing recreational marijuana.
Last year, Governor O'Malley signed a bill which will allow the use of medical marijuana. But the program has not yet been established and will only be for those suffering from chronic illnesses.
Baltimore City Delegate Curt Anderson says he plans to introduce a bill which would actually allow those over 21 to possess up to one ounce of pot. It would also allow residents to grow up to three marijuana plants. A similar law went into effect New Year's Day in Colorado.
"It creates a new tax source of probably up to $80 or $100 million for the state of Maryland, Anderson said.
He adds that locking people up for possessing small amounts of marijuana is simply wrong and a waste of resources by police and prosecutors.
"Young, African-American males are getting arrested, getting records, can't find jobs, can't find employment," Anderson said.
But some critics say any legislation that would legalize the possession of even small amounts of marijuana would send the wrong message to young people.
"[Teens] will be smoking more pot than they ever have ever because they'll be able to get it off the street easier than they can now," Baltimore County substance abuse expert Mike Gimbel said.
Gimbel takes aim at the bill's sponsor.
"For Delegate Curt Anderson from Baltimore City to be a sponsor of this bill when he has problems in a city that needs drug treatment, not more pot, that's crazy to me," Gimbel said.
But Delegate Anderson says there's a big difference between dealers and those who possess small amounts of pot. As it stands now, those caught possessing small amounts of marijuana in Maryland face up to 90 days in prison and a $100 fine.
Montgomery County Delegate Heather Mizeur, who is also running for Governor, also supports legalizing marijuana. The 2014 Maryland General Assembly session convenes next Wednesday in Annapolis.

I hate this fucking rhetoric about "sending the wrong message." Baltimore has got some serious issues with the black community and drugs. All this stop snitchin shit started in Baltimore. They really need to just make it recreational and it would start to help clean that fucking filthy city up.

Lmao.. That's my city. It isn't all bad. The bad neighborhoods speak for the whole city as far as the country is concerned. Everybody knows Baltimore for crime and such. But its just like any other "hood". There are some great parts.

I don't watch the wire. I do remember vising the Rams Head Live a lot. I saw a pimp smack some girl in the middle of the street when I went to go put a parking pass on my car.
And that McDonalds right outside the venue?
Never again. The inner harbor is nice.

IF anything I think it would make it harder for young teens to get a hold of and would help reduce hard drug use overall. As well as making it less likely for young people to get involved in other drugs.

the dealers would easily buy MJ from stores and just sell it for like 5 or 10 dollars more. its like buying beer for minors, a finders fee or whatever. i mean its just backwards what you said, thats how i feel im sorry.
Note: I am not calling you stupid or anything of the sort, I just feel differently.

I have never in my life met/heard of a single odd-entrepreneur making any kind of decent profit selling alcohol to minors. I can not say the same for almost every "serious" drug dealer...

They could SHARE with 18 year olds, but other then that stores are going to sell.
I was buying alcohol at 18, girls were literally buying it much younger.
Ive never even imagined some guy getting store bought weed and selling it to kids, but the type of person I imagine fearing that would probably want to kick my teeth in for turning on mtv2 on a Sunday.
And usually when people say so and so isn't so bad it means the place is condemned, I read about the place in rollingstone. The place is unsalvageable there is really nothing to wash off, the city is going to get flooded soon and all that will be left after the fact is pairs of cats, dogs, rats and pigeons.

It seems just to Baltimore for this particular document. There is a maryland one to that was proposed not that long ago. It will still take about a year before you see any physical progress.
