Moving to a new country.
    #19361828 - 01/03/14 02:08 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys.

I'd like to hear some input on this topic, how realistic it is, any similar experiences, or just anything you want to add.

So, a little intro.

I am 20 years old, from poor EU country, dropped out of university like 2 months ago, got into financial problems, couldn't pay rent, bills, collection agency is on me. Recently I tried to commit suicide, but failed.
Anyway, I asked around, I could get like some money to move away from this place. Not much, 1000EUR. As there is not much to lose, I am thinking about going to the Netherlands, cause that's one thing I always wanted to do. So last nights I've been thinking more and more about it. I know I can't afford any living there, not without job, but I've been googling, and there seems to be a lot of people offering accommodation in exchange for work. I've spent most of life in countryside, I got some IT/Electronics skills, so I think I could survive. Thing is, I haven't much time to prepare, so I will be homeless for some time, I guess.
Have any of you left country like that? ( I guess I want to hear encouraging story  ) Any tips/warnings? [I know that I should have some better plan..]
Thanks in advance.

My suggestion is: Do not travel to any country where you cannot obtain a working visa. Without it, you will remain in poverty, and life will pretty much blow for you.

Crystal G, thanks for suggestion. I checked online about situation in the Netherlands -

As I am from EU, I guess I am all ok.

You are going to lose parts of your old identity, gain new perspectives, but some times you're gonna miss home.

VeryStrangeMan,
Why do you have to move to a new country?
Just move to a new city or something.

Yeah, I have no doubts I am gonna miss a lot of things, but then again, this place is killing me.

It doesn't really work like that here, then I must live underground, cause my all troubles will still follow me like a plague. This is quite small country I am in at the moment.

Sounds good enough. I've been googling info all day, and I keep stumbling upon posts saying, that Dutch people are rude, but I still do not believe it. I have not met any in real life, but have chatted with quite much, and they totally seemed cool. Anyway, I am still browsing around. Will update if I succeed. Would be cool to meet some Shroomery members in future, I believe there must be some in the Netherlands.
Thanks everyone for input.

I've moved to a different country several times, although never under such circumstances as the ones you've described.

Some general recommendations I would give you:
-Look into WWOOFing (http://www.wwoof.net/).  This can allow you to stay in another EU country and not have to worry about finding housing and food.  You can do this for a year or more, though people usually do it for less time.

-Look into free universities.  There are free universities in the EU, including (I believe) in Netherlands.  I will try to track down some links.  (There are also more in Scandinavia, including Finland which is EU.)  If you are living in the EU, you might as well be working toward a useful degree, and you could still work in addition to studying.

-Have a tight food budget, try not to spend any money on shit food.  Couchsurf if you're in between places to live.  Work at a hostel if you have nowhere else to stay, but be on the lookout for better opportunities.

This advice isn't great, but it's all I've got.  I hope you'll do well.

any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

The coolest Dutch people I met weren't living in The Netherlands.

I didn't find the Dutch rude, but I did find some of them vaguely insulting, whilst peppering the entire conversation with extremely polit lingo. Probably about 1 in 20 were like this, but I would have guessed this was because I'm American and nothing else.

I remember telling some dude on the train in Utrecht I was from USA,
and he called me lazy or something, but with a cheerful tone. I countered by saying, ''Well I made it to Europe, didn't I'' Maybe, though, they just have a bizarre way of chumming it up with strangers.

I also remember a cheerful, smiley Bartender that immediately dropped his smile and friendliness after I said I lived in Berlin.

I wouldn't say they are Rude, but very upfront like the Germans.

But, I don't know much about the people there at all, aside from my Brief Experience.

Wiccan Seeker would be the guy to ask on this.

No, this is good, thanks a lot. I guess I cannot enroll in any university until autumn, but still, good point you made. Gonna check out WWOOF right now. Thanks.

Stuff's quite hard, in fact I can't even enjoy smoking up, my legs are dying, money is running out, no luck finding any job, not even voluntary kind of stuff. Broke laptop's screen, three guys tried to rob me one night, night's are cold. I am tired.

Are you still in your home country, or have you already made the move to Netherlands or elsewhere??  Do you have any money?  What do you mean about your legs - are you fatigued from walking/standing so much, or do you have some medical condition?

Wish I could offer some help beyond the advice I gave above.  Hope things will go better for you in the coming weeks.  Stay strong.

Hey.

I am in the Netherlands already, and yeah, I bruised one of my heels (from walking too much) and my knees hurt like hell, but I already bought patches, so that's gonna be fine. I still got some cash, sent out some CVs today, so thanks for wishing me good. I hope good vibes are going to your place as well.
