Promoting events

My brother owns a pro audio soundsystem, but isn't very technically literate. He's tasked me with promoting his soundsystem / looking for potential venues / djs and generally spreading the word.
It started as a free party rig, but shits gotten too expensive and valuable to risk it being seized.. so it's time to get into the legitimate party circuit.
Obviously we've got our own resident acts and shit, and are known in the local underground scene but I'm not entirely sure how you make the transition from throwing parties in abandoned warehouses to packing out legitimate venues...
We've already done a fair few club nights, but they've all been relatively small scale and amateurish, largely off the backs of other soundsystems that we know.. We want to up the game and branch out.
Does anyone have any experience with music promotion? Whether it be for bands or whatever, I'm sure the process is similar.

I do. I'm not sure exactly what your asking though.. So your bro is throwing and you promote? Are they rave types?

Yeah basically he's got the hardware, he knows how to set it up, does the transport logistics etc.. he basically wants me to do the administrative side of shit.. looking for & booking venues, finding acts, promoting nights, generally raising awareness of the soundsystem in the scene that we're in.
It's predominantly a drum n bass soundsystem, but we play hardtek, jungletek, psy, techno.. We like to keep it varied. There are quite a lot of dnb soundsystems around these ends, so hopefully the variety should open up our horizons a bit. Basically 'rave' nights, but less gay than that .

No, I'm kinda diving in head first. A few of my friends have been doing this shit for a while, so once I've got to grips with the process I'm gonna get them to help me out.. I just want to get to grips with what I'm talking about, so I know what I need to ask .
We already do nights with other more established soundsystems.. they generally take care of this side of things.. but my brothers plowing a load more money into the hardware and consequently wants to branch out and get a more independent and professional approach to things.
I'm just not even sure where to begin .

Your kind of loosing me with the sound system part. Who ever plays should bring their own stuff for music. Or do you mean like speakers and such? Most clubs will already have that for you. I can understand the warehouses but if you want to get away from that..
But first things first you need a promo company or you really have nothing to market. You can't just be like my bro is throwing a party and expect to sell out.
Its a pretty crazy business with ever growing competition. I have been in this field for years. When getting started you are going to want to just put yourself out there. Meet club owners, bars, DJs, other promoters, and other people you will be needing to do lights and stuff like that.
Starting with just 2 people will be difficult but not impossible. Facebookand handing out flyers at similar parties is going to be your best friend. Try to find a niche within your market as well. Do something or present it in a way no one else is at the moment.
The beginning will be a struggle. Pick a small venue for your first gig. Like 150-200 people. You must build reputation.
You say a lot of your friends are in on it. Ask them. There is a whole lot of behind the scenes things nobody knows. And a lot of money gets involved quickly.

We do pro audio hire out, but also put on nights using our own hardware (speakers, amps, lights, rigging, decks etc) in rented venues.. The last night we did had about 300 people in attendance...
We did the sound for a small stage at a large festival last year, but since then then, we've upgraded and shit... Basically that's what we're trying to break into, but you've gotta build up the rep and meet the right people first .
I guess you're right, facebook and flyering is the best approach at first. I'm gonna work on the brand as well; our name is known locally, but it needs a more professional edge. I need to get networking . Our crew is more than me and my brother, there's about 8 people directly involved, with moving setting up and shit, I've been asked to take over cause the guy that's been doing it is getting too messy, lazy and sloppy.
What I'm uncertain about is how I even find the venues and what process I go through to organise this kind of shit

The scene here isn't just about the DJs its about the speakers, the hardware powering them, the lights.. the whole AV experience. Basically all the parties are put on by different soundsystems.. it's kind of like a brand.. each one with their own custom built system.
Part of this is us:
