Crowd sourcing to feed the needy.
    #19361953 - 01/03/14 03:00 AM (10 years, 28 days ago)

Time for a little crowd sourcing for a community project!

I have made a New Year's resolution to feed as many hungry local families as I can this year. My plan is to erect a large GH in my yard and grow food to donate to families in need. I'm bidding on this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/111248239078?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1431.l2649, for my first outdoor greenhouse. I will be building a 4x4 support frame on the inside to help sturdy it up and support the roof during snow fall. I plan on building this electrically off-grid before next fall so i can grow year-round.  There is enough room in it for a couple aquaponics tanks, so I'll be able to offer fresh fish as well as hydroponically grown vegetables and herbs. I will also have my outdoor mushrooms in it as well. This greenhouse setup will be used as an educational model for me to teach families how easy it is to grow fresh food in their own homes, so they'll never go hungry again.

Any funds donations would be greatly appreciated, and will help cover costs of supplies. My girlfriend and I make just enough money between the two of us to cover our bills, so we're gonna need help with things such as: The GH, blue barrels for a "barrel-ponics" system, large caged water bins to make the fish tanks, 500+ gallons of water, and other equipment and materials to tie everything together. I will, of course, be hitting up the resale stores and trying to re-purpose, reuse, and recycle as many materials as possible, but there will be a nominal cost to get everything going.

So instead of donating money to huge charities that have outrageous overhead costs, consider donating to us to directly put food on the tables of hungry children right here in the USA. Anything you can spare would be awesome. $1, $5, $10, $20, etc... Every little bit helps! Our Paypal account name is Wabash River Mycological Society, @gmail.com (no spaces) if needed. Thank you, and we hope your New Year is as fruitful as I plan ours to be.

Unless you have a really huge backyard, it just isn't possible to grow the calories an average family needs in a backyard. Here's a rough indication of the yields you could expect: http://www.gardeningplaces.com/articles/nutrition-per-hectare1.htm

It just doesn't add up for the average family and the average backyard. Still, your effort is sympathetic.

I have my back yard for the first greenhouse. The lot next door was completely flattened and cleared (except for a nice little evergreen I convinced them not to tear out) after my neighbor died in a house fire in 2012. I have permission to garden on it until I can purchase the property when it goes up for Commissioner's Sale. After that I will probably install a couple more of these same units, and still have plenty of room for corn and other larger seasonal plants. I haven't updated the thread yet, but the "Steve Wilson Memorial Garden" link in my sig is where I'll posted all updates to the project.

The link you posted is way behind the times man. Take a look at this vid. It is highly possible to feed several families from a well designed urban farm.

Their design in the video is my base model. I plan on having chickens, a couple goats, bio-diesel processing unit, a methane bio-digester, solar panels, etc once I own the property and can build on it.

Uhm, yeah, but in the video, they passingly mention that they still have to buy their wheat and corn - i.e. the staple calorie providers are not part of the 'self reliant' package. Again, it's sympathetic and it's nice to grow some veggies in your garden, but it doesn't cover the calorie needs of a family.

While I appreciate your input, it's not going to discourage me in the least. I'm not just being sympathetic. I am one of those that most of the time it's a choice between paying bills, or buying food. Fortunately I don't have any children, so I don't have to watch my child suffer from hunger. But I know plenty of families that do, and can no longer stand by and watch when I know I can make a difference.

Oh, my intention isn't to discourage you at all! It's just a matter of managing expectations. Be sure to go ahead; it would be great if you could prove me wrong.

My cousin has been working with Children and Family Services and various NPO's for years and has agreed to help me write up a mission statement and grant proposals for a non-profit start-up. I'm researching everything I can on starting a 501c3 this weekend so I can get the ball rolling ASAP. If funding goes good, I'll be able to purchase the lot so I can build on it too. I have been in contact with the folks at Indiana State University's Institute for Community Sustainability (on an unrated topic). They have a rather large plot of land by the college that they do individual community garden plots on. If my off-grid educational model proves efficient and easily maintainable I will propose to them that we go to the city and try to get permission to build units on city-owned vacant lots.

Hey!

I just took a look at your green house you are bidding on,  not sure if you got it yet but you could probably save yourself some $$ and build it yourself

I have built myself two already,  using pvc conduit tubing and #6 poly sheeting.  Made a base frame with 2x4 boards, anchored to the ground with 2x4 cut into spikes. ( kind of like a post frame building )

Then you can go as big or small as you want, under $100 in parts.

:2cents:

Very awesome idea tho!

Under a $100 in parts you say? Hmmm... Can you post any pics of yours?

I can,  they are burried underneath some snow right now.  can you wait a day or two before I dig them out and take a few pics?

Here is the parts break down tho,  I hope that helps  in the mean while

Spruce: Construction Studs, 2"x4" at 8' long, I used 8 for 1 greenhouse  - $2.50 per piece

10 ft. x 30 ft. Clear 6 mil Polyethylene Sheeting  - cut for me at the local shop  -  $15.00

JM eagle 1 in. x 10 ft. PVC Conduit,  I used 16  - $2.51 each

Screws and staples, not sure how many I used, but a bag should be no more than $10

Total cost in parts = $85.16 CAD

I have been told that the 6 mil poly will weaken after about 6 months in the sun,  so far mine have gone 8 months, and have been holding up over winter.  nothing is growing in them right now, but I will see in spring if I need to replace it

I made a 16'x 8' frame with the studs.  Then put the conduit tubes in a dome like shape between the long side of the frame.  screwed the tubes into place, and glued them where needed to keep them together.  Stretched the poly over the frame, and stapled it to the sides ( took some 1x1 peices of spruce and stapled the edgesof the poly to that, then screwed that to the frame )

That is pretty much it, when you see the pics hopefully my description will be more clear

Awesome, thanks. Oh, wait a minute..... CAD? You're in Canada? Ah hell, that just simply won't work here then, nevermind.

Don't worry about digging it out to take pics bro, I won't be building it soon. Too much snow here as well. When you do get the chance, take some pics of the inside framework mostly. The plastic sheeting deteriorating is one of the reasons I was going to go with the large store-bought one. It has the woven reinforcement and is UV protected. I may still get it, depending on finances, but I will surely be building a smaller one as you describe. I believe it would cost relatively the same to buy or build the 10'x26' size. I would want to use pressure treated lumber here, set posts in concrete, etc. My father is a Master Carpenter and he'd kick my ass for building anything out of wood that wouldn't meet his standards. Not literally kick my ass, of course, but there would be much scorn and witty ridicule.....

I have plans to rip off my existing enclosed back porch and build a insulated glass GH directly attached to the house. The back porch is a shitty add-on built in the '50s (house was built in 1890). The GH addition will be at ground level, have a concrete slab with a floor drain and radiant heating, proper fans (and an AC unit) and lighting, and whatever else I need to make it a functional GH/living area. Size will have to depend on material costs, but I'm shooting for 20'x30' at least.

No worries at all.  And I totally hear you about using pressure treated wood and cement piers to anchor the unit.  I share the same dilemma of having an over-perfectionist father who has been a carpenter for the last 30 years or so lol

Where I am geographically its really easy to anchor down the GH with wooden spikes.  we have some of the best soil in north america, right in the red river vally. Cement piers would just be over kill for us.

I will definitely take some pics of the inside of it when things start to defrost here a bit.

now.. Whats wrong with CAD? lol, Isn't stuff way cheaper in the USA than in Canada?  I was down in grand forks two weeks ago,  bought a bag of dog food for more than %50 cheaper for the same name brand up here!  went to menards as well,  building supplies are dirt cheap compared to what we have to pay.  I swear its some sort of scheme thats being played on us Canadains

no worries!

Im doing some research on off the grid living.  your fish barrel idea really is interesting.  maybe I over looked you mentioning earlier, but what types of fish do you plan to raise?  you were planning on eating them too right?

Not sure yet. There is the edible route, of course, but I'm bouncing around the idea of growing minnows to sell for bait. Or both.
