Where is the vascular ring on this variegated lopho?
    #19162223 - 11/19/13 09:18 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I did some grafting when i cut open the lopho i couldnt see the vascular ring at all so i assumed it was tiny and in the middle

Here the bit i cut, i cant view the vascular ring

I was wondering if anyone knows which coloured ring is the closest to the vascular ring? (picture below)

I did the graft right through the middle so the san pedros very visible vascular ring cut through the red blue and yellow theoretical vascular rings i drew on the variegated lopho

Forget the pics man and just graft. It will always be dead center even when not seen. I grafted a crested pup and it looked like it had no vascular ring but it stuck. Its nice and plump now.

Ahhh thanks ferrel, i was over thinking it, i actually have the bottom half that i cut of the loph and have ran out of grafting stock. I'm gonna go steal an opuntia pad from my street and graft it onto that.

The owners won't mind it is as big as a tree and their are broken pads all over the alleyway that have started to grow.

But if an extremely unorthodox ninja pointed a gun at your head and you had to guess which color ring it had to be closest to or else you would die which one would you choose?

:freshwtf:

You over thought it thats why. If I make a cut and see Nothing I just graft because an aerole will gve way to new life. Just my thoughts and experience.

This should take care of it.
So long as your root stock vascular ring passes across the centre of your scion, you will cross vascular rings.

It doesn't look like you cut it straight. The vascular ring will always be right under the growth tip. From your pics the vascular bundle could be over one side because the growth point is on the side.

Edit to say I think the way you have positioned the scion you still will have got the vascular bundles crossing.

Cheers

By the way you have it positioned I think you will be ok. If you look down at the very top ( grow tip ) and follow the line down through the scion you will see where the vascular bundles should be. If it looks like they will contact the ring on the stock you will be all good.
It is best to cut at 90deg to the tip if possible then you know the vascular ring is going to be dead centre of you cut.

Cheers

That is very cool considering the main graft didn't plump much but is birthing a new pup!
good job op !
all mine grew first then pupped.

The apex was likely damaged so it's throwing out a pup rather then growing the main head. At least now you know that your graft has taken growth

One thing people may have not think, this have been written very famous vendor also.. I don't know can I say who is that vendor.

However, that person claim good point, every aerole have basically vascular ring what you can't see, so if there happens "accident" your scion and stock vascular ring doesn't "meet" or are "wrong" however, vascular in the stock or scion what goes to aerole work also as possible connection.

I have notice some way this argument that even "failed graft" can success if there happens to be "hidden vascular" going to aerole and it will connect as well as scion or stock center vascular ring.

Some rules are "old" because of this.. Some grafts what would probably don't even starts to grow can still attach and grow if person accidentally "hit" the vascular connected to aerole and therefor connected to center vascular ring.. Some are very skilled and do aerole grafts, I have not success with aerole grafts(or even tried) but I have notice stock plant with lots of vascular rings going like "web" from center to aeroles, it helps scion to attach because these hidden vascular "veins" working as well possible good point of connect the scion.

There are not much of 100% proof of this but if aerole grafts work, then horizontal way "veins" to aeroles works as well as good vascular rings (or veins) to attach scion to stock etc..

Hard to explain in english easier this.. But not all "rules of grafting" are so simple, sometimes graft can success without main vascular rings doesn't even meet another if scion attach to vascular going to aerole.. But this needs luck.
