Finding pecan truffles in texas pecan orchards * 1
    #19349266 - 12/30/13 11:40 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone have experience with finding truffles? Pecan truffles of the species Tuber lyonii can be found in the south in pecan orchards. Is it possible that I could find them under single pecan trees? There is a huge pecan tree next to my fathers workplace. It's hard to find orchards that just let people walk in, most pecan orchards are only open during november. Thinking about training a dog. The smell and taste of black truffle salt alone is so addicting, it smells like sweaty feet, a kinda sexy smell. Guess that's why female pigs are attracted to the androstenone in them :p

Looks like it is a pretty common species in Pecan orchards.  You should go look for it.  When you find some, you should use them to train a puppy to find them.

If you find some please send some to me so I can get some pics of the spores.

Truffle spores can be cool looking, here is a pic I took of some that someone mailed me.

Funny how the owners of all the pecan orchards don't realize the hidden gold mine under their trees.
It looks like most truffle hunting happens at night without the landowners permission. Will probably wait until next november when the pecan orchard opens, instead of risking a trespassing ticket

It seems like there are 3 different species of pecan truffle, Tuber lyonii, Tuber canaliculatum, and Tuber texensis.

Have you tried asking anyone who owns an orchard? Just be polite and make sure they know you will respect their land. Worst they can do is say no.

i got some shaved on a dish a couple weeks ago.  they were largely flavorless.  and certainly not that truffle scent that will make me do dastardly things in a fancy restaurant.  But I could never afford to have shaved REAL truffles, so...

Truffles that are found with a rake are flavorless, because not all of them are ripe. Or they might have been stored for too long and all the smell evaporated, truffle taste is purely from the smell molecules

Wait...what? is that one spore?

Also, I'm going to have to check this out. I have some relatives with quite a few pecan trees on their property.

Neat! all the asci I've seen up until now are elongated, like those balloons one would make animals out of.
That's really cool.

Might be hard to find truffles at the moment because of the drought in texas

Also the owners of the pecan orchards around here are really stubborn, and only let people on their property during pecan season in november. So looks like the only way to get truffles is to trespass at 3:00 AM, which I believe is how most truffles are found.

Have you asked them? I'd try that before I trespassed & risked getting shot.

Yes I've asked, and they said they only let customers on their property for one day in november, which I missed. So will probably wait for next year, instead of risking a trespassing ticket or getting shot
