All of these came from my backyard.
Do any of these match any known species?

I think they all match "known species", but are you asking if they are magic? None of them are. You've got a bunch of Laccaria, a bolete of some sort, some puffballs or perhaps Pisolithus, some Inocybe, and some Russula. Perhaps others as well.

Pic 4 might not. It looks like it is a Cortinarius from subgenus Telamonia, and a lot of the smaller Telamonias are undescribed.

All I can see in photo 3 are Laccaria with one random pored mushroom sneaking in on the right.

I have more pictures, this time better quality. No editing other than reducing the size of the pictures.

1 seems to show more of that Cortinarius, 3 & 4 mostly show Russula.

How do you know? what are the characteristics to look for? How can I identify these?

The red cap, white/yellowish gills & brittle chalk like texture of the Russula is an instant give away, there are lots of red Russula that are mostly futile to identify further... Also how it has no latex shows that its not Lactarius which is the other genus a similar texture.
The Cortinarius is more a combination of being a nondescript little brown mushroom with brown gills (and spores) and growing under trees.

Like anything else it takes practice. Start by haunting the posts in this forum and trying to ID all the mushrooms you can before looking at other peoples' ID suggestions. The internet is a fantastic resource to help you identify things. I started early on using "mushroom expert" Michael Kuo's identification keys, and a field guide or two. You will find that in a short period of time you will be able to ID over 50% of the mushrooms you come across in your area. Soon after that you will be able to get 75% of all the mushrooms you see to genus without even looking them up.
