Gymnopilus species can easily spread to stumps and fallen logs and continue to fruit for years.

HEY STEEEBO

Go for Allenii. Scout parks with large areas of planted mulch. large seeding trees will continue to provide food for myc in further years.

Locate at moderate to high shade, close to low ground cover (shrubs, flowers), well drained area. Combine substrate of mixxed wood chips/pulp/cuttings, newspaper, egg carton, RBG, verm, and perlite. Cover disturbed area after planting with local/immediate foilage.

You're going to need to move a large amount of spawn for prominent results. Prep at least 5Gal worth for dist. in the wild per-location.

Move at night, carry discreet unmarked jars of spawn. Garden spades/tillers make quick work of park mulches/soils.

Spread spawn roughly 1-2" below casing layer, consider rainfall level to avoid dead spawn.

You've got a long wait, kick back. If you started in spring this year Check the following season, report back. If not get started now and you might get results within the year or 1.5yr, this is about commitment :goodluck:

I do not condone or endorse any actions said above

If the temp drops for only one night I think you will be fine with 4" on top.  Look at nurseries in your area they probably just stack a few bags of much around plants that shouldn't get below 25-28f above ground in pots and they live fine through winters.  If it 14 for days / weeks that would be a different story as it would freeze deeper each day

Not yet but it's a super vigorous species that warrants more attempts. As long as the patch in the ground survived that freeze, it should be growing again now like everything else. It's so warm!! I was spreading chips in a t shirt yesterday! I hope for a solid chance of fruits this year. Not sure when though.
