Questions about tobacco
    #19360039 - 01/02/14 06:21 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys I'm planning on starting a small tobacco grow next season to see if it can help me with the money I pay for cigarettes, which is a lot and I was wandering if there are any people on here that have experience with different tobacco plants and if so which one is the best to grow? I'm more looking to grow one that has a high nicotine content and tastes similar to regular boxed cigarettes since the sites that I've looked at really don't give much information on these concerns and just repeat the same information for each different type of tabacco so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You wanna grow nicotiana rustica. Never do it while drunk becuase your head will fuckin spin man. Its a pretty good type to grow. Very potent.

I wholeheartedly agree!

I stopped smoking cigs and then cigars because I quit getting a buzz, then I decided to give growing them a try. When I finally harvested my rusticas and tried them, I got a surprising buzz off a small amount of leaf, although I didn't cure it.

Give it a shot  I'm sure if you grew a mixture of rusticas and burleys you could find a mix that you'd enjoy. You just couldn't reuse the seed because they'd cross pollinate.

I made that mistake, and my legs fell out from under me.I couldn't move,or call out for help.It was a totally frighting experience, one I'll never try again.I also detest Tobacco, the drug, not the plant,so I'm not even sure why I tried it.

Isnt rustica 8-10% nicotine compared to normaally tabacco which is 1-2% nicotine?

Rustica is also what is used in more northern/central northern of the americans spiritual experiences of the natives i think.

I balled up,and sucked the juice from a leaf the size of the one in the pic, which is gorgeous by the way:thumbup:And it put me on the ground:tongue2:And yes,I believe Rustica is the strongest of all the Tobacco varieties.

How tall can Rustica get and about how large are the leaves fully grown I was also wandering since I don't have the ability to have a curing tent sitting for long periods of time is there any other way of curing or drying that could cut down the time needed for curing under 3 months or is that just the shortest amount of time before the leaves are dry enough to be rolled & smoked?
BTW Thank you all for the help:grin:

I smoke the leaves uncured. It's supposed to be more dangerous due to ammonia levels and a higher nicotine content, but don't quote me on that, because I could be completely wrong. I tried microwaving a small amount of leaf when I first started so I could get a feel for it, and it made the smoke harsher with less of a buzz, but it could be a viable way if you're impatient (jonsing ).

After eight weeks my largest rustica is 18 inches tall; But that's growing indoors under a hps light with suboptimal conditions, but it's my first run and I can't say I'm upset.

I hope it isn't against the rules to post this but I went to davesgarden and looked up the hardiness zone for tobacco and it stated that tobacco grows in hardiness zone 9-12 "I believe" and I live in zone 7 so I was wandering if it would even be possible to cultivate tobacco properly in my area? I'm kinda new to all of this so if anyone could help explain how all this works I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You for all for the help

Thats is about right.

When it had seed pods I forgot about them and they opend up without me knowing and the next thing I know I got a full blown rustica patch on the ground. They didnt last long with the heat and all.

I'm in kind of the same spot here and I wanna make sure I do this the right way so my plants can flourish.
Does anyone have any knowledge on the growth of tobacco in different hardiness zones in America?

Tobacco likes lots of fertilizer (Preferably manure) i used chicken poop and water and one of my tobacco's grew 8.5 feet tall. Then to cure them i humidified them and placed them in a couple liter plastic container and had them under an electric blanket for a couple of weeks. Im in zone 5b and i grew a nice crop. Seedlings are very small, but not hard to germinate if you keep them moist.  Rusticas didn't grow more than 3 ft, but i had a nice harvest.

Rustica is too potent for a regular smoke for me.  If you want to make a smoking blend with herbs mostly then rustica might be nice to smoke.  Thats what got me started smoking regular tobacco I think.  I grew rustica and smoked my first grow. Been smoking ever since.

If you buy a few different cultivars and experiment with them the first year you will have enough seed to do as you please.  Burley and bright leaf are a couple varieties to look into for smoking blends for cigarettes.

I'd like to try a fire cure sometime and make latakia variation.
