autoclave question
    #19359711 - 01/02/14 05:14 PM (10 years, 28 days ago)

so Im just getting use to using my autoclave, tried doing rye berries a couple of times, and I think i may have burned them a lil...
when using im using my autoclave to cook something at 15 psi for 60 mins, where should i set my trigger to cut the heat off at?
as in, do I set my trigger to turn off above 15psi and turn on every time it get bck down to 15 psi, or do i set my trigger to turn off when it hits 15psi so it, turns back on somewhere below it?

Looks like you have a fancy pants pressure cooker.

We watch ours while they are on and adjust the burner as needed.

My guess is that you need to have an inch or two in the bottom of the cooker that you might not have.

Also you need to prep rye according to instructions provided on the site.  Soak, simmer, rinse, drain, and measure out into the containers.

Lastly don't let the pressure out of the pressure cooker when you are done just turn it off and let it cool on it's own until the pressure reaches 0 psi.  Just make sure you do open it and shake jars if you need to do so to keep them from sticking.  If you let the steam out when it is hot you will be letting moisture out from the jars.

Are you sterilizing grains or cakes?

following rr "lets grow dvd" he says that once the time has lapsed, turn off said sterilizer and open the valve... and following the manual  it says "at the end of the sterilization period, turn the on/off toggle switch to "off" and move the toggle on the control valve to the upright (vertical) position so that the steam is permitted to escape. When te toggle is in the upright position, the steam will escape at maximum. To avoid touching the hot toggle, you may use any object such as a pencil or hot pad, etc., to move the toggle from closed to open"

We are talking about grains right?

Do you have a wet towel and an inch or two of water at the bottom of your Pressure cooker?

Also what size cooker do you have?  Model?

this is a general question, in regards to where to set the trigger (thermoswitch), do I want my psi's to reach above my desired psi and then come down or should my thermoswitch turn off when it hits my desired psi

You want it to hold right at 15 psi.

Cakes 60 minute, grains 90 minutes.

does anyone on here have an autoclave? with a thermoswitch? which turns the pressure cooker on and off at temps which give yo about a 3-4 psi range it cooks at?

Most of use use regular pressure cookers.

There are some people who use autoclaves....gonna have to wait and see if they respond..

Maybe your heater has some delay, happens with electric heaters
In which case you could try setting it to cutoff at 14psi and the pressure might climb up to 15 from the residual (heat)energy in the heating element

^ this was what im asking about... should i set it below 15, allow it to climb to 15 (where it will shut down) lower back to 14 and then climb to 15 again, so on and so forth, OR should i set the thermoswitch above 15, so it climbs above it, turns off and then gos down to 15

cool, just wondering if when it goes above 15, i could b over cooking them, even though it just Fluctuates within a few psi

so does everyone on here, run their PC, once the time is up turn off PC, then wait till ur gauge hits 0 before opening the valve?

because if that in the general census, ill follow that rule of thumb, but both my manual and RR "lets grow..." dvd, say to open the valve right after ur time is up and u turn ur PC off

quote from manual
"at the end of the sterilization period, turn the on/off toggle switch to "off" and move the toggle on the control valve to the upright (vertical) position so that the steam is permitted to escape. When te toggle is in the upright position, the steam will escape at maximum. To avoid touching the hot toggle, you may use any object such as a pencil or hot pad, etc., to move the toggle from closed to open"

once your 90 min cycle is up just kill the heat and just open it the next day, you dont want steam escaping it by releasing the valve itself you will release all the pressure out of your jars and they could pop your filters and they can break as well

Once my time is up I simply turn off the stove and walk away.

30 minutes later when the pressure drops naturally I open it up, switch out the jars, and start another cycle.

I use an autoclave but once I hit 15 PSI I have to fiddle about with the stove to get it to stay at the temperature I want- watching it carefully to see if it doesn't drop or rise in temp!

Don't get too exact though, a little over or under is no big thing, just make sure it stays consistent and not rising or falling! The main thing is getting the knack so you can go away and rest for a bit!

If I can maintain the desired temp for about 10 minutes or so I know that I can rest assured that the temp will stay that way throughout the cycle! Always keep an eye on it though! Don't wander off and get stoned!

I'd like something that could set and control the temp or PSI automatically, but I tend to use that time to tidy up my house and the mess I've made anyway so I'm always on my feet monitoring the situation!

Oh and don't use the electricity or plug to heat up your autoclave! As tempting and rapid as it may be, you'll never control it that way without a thermostat, and it will just blast on up to about 20 PSI which is really too hot (and scary) for our purposes! Cracked many glass jars this way!

so are you saying you have an electric autoclave and opposed to plugging it in you just heat it off your stove?
never considered that an option, this might be a stupid question because the entire purpose of this tool is it being a heating mechanism, but putting your electric auto clave on an oven burner doesnt effect any of the electric mechanics in it?
