What the hell is this??
    #19358868 - 01/02/14 02:35 PM (10 years, 28 days ago)

I found this while hiking with some buddies of mine a few years back sticking out of soil and roots. I always wondered what it was. If you look closely, you'll notice it's a few mushrooms growing out of each other. It had some wild colors to it. I always wanted to find out what it was but never took the time to do the research. Whether it was psychoactive or not, I highly doubt it, but it did have a certain mystical look about it.

That's pretty cool! Maybe it was a cluster of Omphalotus that dried out and took on some really cool colors.

Wow thanks guys! Some google image searches has given me confidence that it is either of the two. Not sure if it matters but a trail had been made by cutting out a portion of a small hill. I found it on the face of the unearthed layers of sediment next to some roots of a tree that we're previously buried but now exposed by digging out of the trail.

The funky colors and almost non-existent and/or lateral stems do lean toward Sarcomyxa. I like that idea better, though jack o'lanterns would be more likely to fruit from tree roots. Though if they didn't start growing until the roots were exposed... hmm.

Can either of them be found in Southern California?

Omphalotus olivascens is very common in Southern California.  Sarcomyxa serotina is only found in far Northern California.

I think thats an interesting idea, but i dont know.

I agree with Omphalotus sp.
Especially looking at the base. Sarcomyxa serotina will have a band of stem and not have gills running all the way down the stem.
