NOTFALL3N said: take the foil off
The jars in question look like small mouth half pints. They have been known to stall before bottom colonization. The best advice that can be given with these jars is to not handle them. IF the brf/verm becomes compacted, its possible that the mycelium will not spread to the bottom portions...possibly stalling prior to full colonization.
And if you have a dry verm layer, the foil is just about totally useless. It could restrict gas exchange, which could also cause stalling. The PF tek uses no tinfoil over the lids.
could using small mouth half pints explain zero colonization at all? my first round was good but since then I've had a jar or two that simply doesn't colonize at all... figured maybe I packed them down to much originally, like when I made them?
other than that though, I haven't really had a problem with those jars... maybe colonized a bit slower but never had one stall out on me in the half way through
I've had a few jars with zero colonization, even after 6 weeks. I kept them to see if contams grew....kinda like a contam barometer for my sterile technique. Prob due to MS knock up. As for the taller jars, they do colonize slower on the bottom, alot slower. Mine are still going, but it's slow going. Do not handle them at all. Every time you set them down, they compact a little more. It's hard to do, but take the boys advice ^^^ and just leave'm.
Best ones are the short fat ones...almost square. ~21 days from knock up to full colonization with those for me, and that was MS

question thou... is there any reason as to why only one side of the jar is colonizing or does it just kinda happen and nature does its thing?

i think it's MS. I have jars doing the same thing man. Don't worry about it. The ones that take longer like that don't need as much consolidation time imo....from what i've seen, the slower ones, once colonized will show invitro pins faster

Alright so i woke up this morning to three jars showing signs of growth (only on one side of the jar though). this picture was the jar with first signs of growth and it looks great. this picture was the jar thathad growth starting yesterday i believe and is looking good as well. http:// then as i was about to out the jars back I happen to get a glimpse of this! I have 5 jars in total and two of them have not shown anything, it may take them longer im assuming.http://

just don't mess with them bro...checkm every few days till you see some action, but try not to pick them tall boys up. Just keep them on a flat surface and spin'em to check out the progress. If not, you'll see them slow right down on the homestretch. Trust me...learn from my noobness.

does picking them up mess with the substrate? like compact it every time you place it down?

i believe so. Moreso with the taller ones...the more stuff on top, the more squishy the bottom...that's the technical explanation too

the tall thin jars....

notice i've got two kinds of jars here..short fat, tall thin. The tall thin ones colonize slower in my very limited noob experience. However, the difference was very noticeable. I knocked up the tall ones two days earlier, and of the 6 that showed any mycelium growth, only 1 is done. As for the short fat ones, of the 7 that showed myc growth, 5 are done, and have been for over a week now.

damn if i would have known that i would have gone for the fat jars instead haha. does the surface area have anything to do with the harvest or like amount you should get. ( the small ones have more room on top of the cake but the tall ones have more space on the sides rather then the top).

no more less gravity, it takes moisture from your cakes and pulls it to the bottom so the taller ones tend to pin more from the bottom, still happens with the fat ones it's just not as noticable, anytime i've used the talls or pints i lay them sideways to fruit

Well since I'm new to all this what should I do? Should I lay them down when the time comes or should I stand them up. I just want to know the best way to get quality over quantity.
